It's Community Development Week! We recently made a significant step toward the preservation of a home for an older adult homeowner right here in Fresno County. As part of our targeted outreach, this home is located in a Racially or Ethnically Concentrated Area of Poverty (R/ECAPs). Together, in partnership with the workforce development efforts of Valley Apprenticeship Connections (VAC), this will ensure we have revitalized the independence and safety of an older adult resident and the neighborhood by improving both the interior and exterior of this home. #Preservation #AgingInPlace #WorkforceDevelopment #CDBG #HUD #Revitalization #CommunityDevelopment #CommunityDevelopmentWeek

Yesterday, we joined the Chowchilla Task Force for a drive-thru distribution event at the Chowchilla Fairgrounds. Donated items consisted of boxes of food, diapers, wipes, personal hygiene supplies, and paper towels. We loved being invited to help out as a community partner! #BuildingCommunity #Teamwork #DriveThru #FoodDistribution

We pray for Habitat programs across the U.S. and Canada as they seek to serve those in need of safe shelter. Nearly 1 in 3 children live in households burdened by housing costs, and too many children experience the trauma of homelessness. Help us to lift each child as high as we can and say, You are cared for and you are loved! In Your love, help everyone to flourish and be the best that they can be. #KeepTheFaith #PrayForChange #SpreadLove #HomesForChildren

If you're having trouble buying a home this year, then you aren't alone! The cost of homes has exploded and the bulk of eager buyers are suffering the consequences. Home inventories are at record lows, prices are unaffordably high, and the cost of lumber has increased by 180% (that's an additional $24,000 per new home). Does that sound affordable to you? We didn't think so. #LackOfAffordableHomes #HousingShortage #HousingCrisis #FixTheProblem

Last week, two of our longtime volunteers and board members planted a tree to honor a Habitat homeowner who recently passed. Dave and Tom are not ones to deliberately stand in the spotlight, but they are dedicated to our mission, vision, and Habitat families. It was this homeowner's dream for her family to own a house and she saw this dream become a reality. While it's impossible to find the right words to say, we pray her family finds comfort together. #PlantLove #TreeOfHonor #Condolences #YouWereLovedGreatly

Please help us welcome Alexandria! Alexandria is currently serving as a ReStore Development and Engagement VISTA through AmeriCorps. She hopes to build upon positive volunteer engagement and development at the three ReStores in the Greater Fresno Area. Previously, she worked as the program associate and chapter advisor for an international nonprofit in the Ghanaian Division. These experiences helped her accumulate important knowledge when creating volunteer engagement opportu...nities, sustainable resource development, and marketing strategies. At one point, she was lucky enough to work as a senior intern with the Fresno City Council Office, District 1! There, she conducted policy research and analysis and assisted with community events, organization, and engagement. She’s so excited to be a part of the team and can’t wait to make an impact in her role! #HabitatAmeriCorps #AmeriCorps #WelcomeAmeriCorps #NewFamilyMember

Madera residents Jerry and his wife Angie have lived in their mobile home for 45 years. As a veteran, Jerry practices an incredibly disciplined lifestyle by concentrating on his health and physical abilities. Unfortunately, he's also been facing challenges due to reoccurring hernias over the last ten years! Our volunteers were quick to assist in removing trees and heavy rocks from his yard. Jerry shared his gratefulness through good-natured jokes and conversation. Thank you, Jerry, for protecting our country and allowing us to partner with you! #CommunityStory #NeighborhoodRevitalization #Veteran #ThankYouForYourService #Madera

#CigarFest isn't just a golf tournament! Of course, this exciting day certainly includes plenty of golfers enjoying cigars out in the fresh air. However, with raffles, auctions, and donation stations, the event itself is intended to be a fundraiser. The auctions and evening dinner were removed this year due to pandemic restrictions, but the event was still a huge success! Thanks to our friends at KSEE24 News for featuring the tournament in a story! #Golfing #SupportCharities #RafflesGalore

"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" These were the familiar words of the Wizard from the 1939 classic film The Wizard of Oz. These words have often been lived out in the actions of Habitat's wizard - Ashley Hedemann. Over 13 years ago Ashley began influencing our construction atmosphere as a volunteer. She ultimately was hired as our Volunteer Coordinator and enhanced our volunteer experience companywide. That warranted a change in title to Volunteer Experience... Coordinator where she took Habitat to an entire new level in terms of volunteer engagement. In the last five years, she and her teams efforts have led to Habitat going from 5,000 volunteer instances to over 23,000 a year! Along the way Ashley built many bridges between staff, and demonstrated such a high aptitude for program and operations we had no choice but to promote her. Now as our Operations and HR Manager, Ashley oversees our construction scheduling, back office, volunteerism and family services programs. Her presence has been felt. Remarkably, she continues to make all of this impact 'behind the curtain' working remotely in Denver Colorado. Oz was known for its grandeur. Little did the people know, much of its prominence was not originated at the hands of some great magical wizard, but by God's grace though the heart of a kind wizard behind the curtain. Our wizard is Ashley Hedemann. With Love, Matthew Grundy | CEO Habitat for Humanity Greater Fresno Area

Norman Schwarzkopf once said "It doesn't take a hero to order men into battle. It takes a hero to be one of those men who goes into battle." This statement couldn't be more true about our fearless Habitat ReStore Director - Torin Blount. Torin is the first to work and often the last to sign out. He is consistent in his work ethic; setting the example of hard work and customer service to all under his command. Over the last five years, Torin has helped triple the footprint ...of our ReStore operation across three cities and two counties. He and his team have helped thousands of shoppers restore their own homes and offices by selling them new and gently used products at a fraction of the cost. Additionally, he has created an environment conducive to workforce development amongst paid staff, volunteers, disabled workers and minor offenders; all while diverting countless pounds of waste from local landfills. To his core, Torin lives out the word 'ReStore.' He knows that while the proceeds of this operation help build and invest in affordable housing throughout the valley, the greatest 'Restoring' happens in the people he engages along the way. He is a hero in my book... and I would go into battle with him any day. If you have benefited from the ReStore in any way... please say yes! With Love, Matthew Grundy
