Giving Tuesday in support of Hand to Hand Dear Friends and Family, An Oakland non-profit mainstay for thirty-nine years, Hand to Hand empowers and positively transforms individuals and communities to create a peaceful and just society. ... Transformation takes place on our training floor where students find courage and inner strength through the teachings and practice of martial arts; and through participation in our self-defense programming where attendees learn to protect themselves from harmful situations, gain insight into the complexities of violence in our culture and become aware of how we are all impacted by sexism, racism, and gender oppression. Our classes explore the links between personal safety and community wellness, because seeing this connection provides an opportunity for healing and encourages every individual to walk fearlessly in their lives. This year, our members continued our community engagement through a series of Oakland based service intensives. Together, we performed 95 hours of hands-on service for non-profit organizations outside of the school, in addition to our 600 + hours of volunteer teaching in our martial arts programs and 100 + hours of volunteer self defense teaching. Through our work on and off the training floor, we strive to express gratitude for our longevity in this community, and to fully integrate the beautiful lessons learned through sustained practice in a safe and trusting training environment. As we give back to our community, we invite you to support us through a year-end donation. With your assistance, we will sustain our low-cost sliding scale fees and expand scholarship offers to potential self-defense or martial arts students. We invite you to join us in creating a world free from racism, hatred, violence and bigotry in all forms, where safety is a basic human right. Volunteer highlights from 2019: United For Success Life Academy (24 hours): Self defense and self-empowerment classes (series of 4) to Spanish speaking women: food and childcare provided) Dream Catcher Youth Shelter Services (36 hours): made and served dinner, played board games and taught/practiced de-escalation options San Pablo Soji (12 hours): neighborhood beautification through trash abatement and gardening Founder’s Day Self Defense Classes (21 hours): free three hour self defense classes for girls ages 12 18 and women Gratefully yours, Sonya Richardson Sonya Richardson Head Instructor / Executive Director Please note: You can make your financial contribution by mailing a check to 5680 San Pablo Avenue, Oakland, CA 94608 or by going to our website, handtohandkajukenbo.com/donate, to make a secure donation online. October 15: the day our late Founder, Professor Coleen Gragen was born, 68 years ago. We honor and give appreciation for her daily at Hand to Hand, and thank her for the many lives she touched, positively shifted, and continues to inspire. Take time to give a shout out if Professor Col trained, trained with, or helped you transform in any fashion. (Photos by Sifu Catrina Marchetti.)
