The Grand View League Research Funding Initiative has funded a local cancer research scientist each year since its inception. Currently, $80,000+ has been raised to fund a seventh research grant. In its 26-year history, nearly $17 million has been raised to fund cancer research and mission services. Challenges due to Covid-19 have forced us to pivot from having a traditional in person event. This is great news, especially for the young people of our state: On Friday August 28, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 793 into law to prohibit the sale of flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes. The passing of this Senate Bill was a David vs: Goliath fight that brought together The American Heart Association, The American Cancer Society, youth, community advocates and other health organizations against Big Tobacco. The tobacco industry has lured our kids into addiction for too long, using menthol and other flavors said Dr. Phillip Gardiner of The African American Tobacco Control and Leadership Council.
