Jeanne Palmer In the Spotlight In 1985, I had just finished my master’s degree in nutrition and got a job at the health department in the Las Vegas area where we were living. One of my responsibilities was to develop a wellness program for the staff. I had heard about Jazzercise and how fun it was, contacted them and they agreed to hold classes in our auditorium after work hours. The location was near a lot of medical offices and a big hospital so they hoped they would draw w...orkers just getting off work from the whole area. Jazzercise at work never became a huge class but I was hooked. I loved the dancing, the music, and the fact that it was a full program including muscle work (no weights at that time). There are so many songs/routines that I love. I remember them when you play them but I tend to zone out in class so I don’t remember most of them.Tina Turner’s songs were always great for getting you going. I still like Are We Human or Are We Dancers and Over the Rainbow. I’ve been active my whole life and I’ve been Jazzercising for thirty-six years. I believe in regular exercise as the route to good health. I’m seventy-six and don’t take any medications. I just wish I was thinner I have made some wonderful friends in Jazzercise and I love the fact the Jazzercisers are a part of the community. We support each other’s causes and the community as a whole. And the community knows us! The pandemic has changed us all. I also had a hip replacement last August which means I can no longer jump around. I will have to do low impact, but that is one reason Jazzercise is so great. You can adapt it to whatever you need. I’ve added some other activities during the pandemic like Pilates and daily walking but I won’t be giving up Jazzercise. It’s been a part of my life for thirty-six years. During the Stay at Home time, I have rediscovered daily long hikes with my husband and more time to garden. I also joined a writing group and I have found that I love the act of writing. As we get back to our new normal, I am going to try to not be as busy as I was before the pandemic. I’m determined to do only those things that bring me joy. I found I like being at home. Zoom has helped keep me connected and I will probably keep doing some Zoom things because it can be more convenient. Zoom allowed us all to see each other. It kept us sane. It also got overwhelming, too many meetings!!!! I don’t use or like Facebook See more

Spotlight on Sue Caslava I first tried Jazzercise while I was in college but I couldn’t afford the classes as a starving student. When we bought a home here in Nevada City in 2015, I looked for a place to exercise and dance, took my first class from Sandy and I was hooked! During that first class, I found myself smiling while exercising/dancing and I knew this would be something I would look forward to doing each day. I used to be a modern dancer and still love this art form,... but it did not provide me with the adrenaline rush I get during each class of Jazzercise. Also, since I split my time between San Diego and Nevada City, I can keep up my exercise by taking classes in both places! I don't have a favorite song. Honestly, I don’t even know the names of the songs but I like the ones with a great beat that make you want to move! Dance and fitness have changed my life and health for the better. I have lots more energy, my blood pressure and heart rate have lowered, I’m less stressed, I’ve lost weight and I have made great friends through the Jazzercise Family! Now that I have friends taking classes with me, I know they are expecting to see me there and when I don’t show, I get a call or text checking in on me. I am inspired by the instructors enthusiasm and energy both in person and online which really keeps me motivated! With Covid hitting all of us in 2020, it made me realize that our health is not guaranteed and that we need to live each day to the fullest. I also try to do something each day to make me happy and Jazzercise is my usual go to! I have rediscovered small joys while staying home. I’ve learned how to make bread in our bread maker, to make apricot jelly, done lots of home improvement including helping my husband, Robert, build a cedar patio shelter and we’re now landscaping our backyard. I have gotten to know our neighbors much better here in Nevada City as so many people sheltered away from the Bay Area all summer long. Well, I sure wish I had invested in Zoom! Most of my meetings with others in 2020 has been on Zoom and it isn’t the same as meeting in person, but it sure beats just a phone call. I’ve reached out to lifelong friends more often thru Facebook and am very thankful for all these ways to communicate See more

Melanie Heckel In the Spotlight! I started to take Jazzercise in 2003 when I moved to Grass Valley from Sonoma County. I had been doing aerobics at a health club there for many years, but had not heard about Jazzercise. I learned about Grass Valley Jazzercise from a friend who had moved to this area before we did. Debbie Perrault was a Jazzercise instructor in Colfax. I knew Jazzercise was for me immediately. I love to dance and get a good workout and being able to combine th...e two makes working out fun, rather than a chore. I was the Assistant Planning Director for Placer County for my first five years locally, so I could only do GV Jazzercise on the weekends, and sometimes picked up a class in Colfax on my way home from work in Auburn. I retired in 2008 and GV Jazzercise has been a big part of my life ever since. I don't have a favorite song, but have enjoyed many over the years. I never seem to know or remember the names of the songs, but love the ones that hit my body making me want to move to the music. Dance and fitness have definitely changed my life for the better. Especially as we get older, getting and staying fit make life so much more enjoyable and you can live longer too. Besides Jazzercise, I was working out at a club twice a week (Pre-pandemic). I also like to hike, kayak, camp and birdwatch and being fit certainly helps me enjoy and appreciate those other activities. GV Jazzercise is also a community, all those people you see on a regular basis, who are friendly and enjoying the dancing as well. Participating in the parades and County Fair is a lot of fun - I am proud to be a member of the GV Jazzercise community! Hopefully, we will get back to all that. In the meantime, since COVID hit, Jazzercise has really saved me. In the beginning, it was Jazzercise on Demand, but it was so great to be able to keep up my workouts at home, stay fit and give some structure to my days. Now I am doing JOD, sometimes coming to class, and sometimes streaming our local classes. Technology has allowed to keep up by doing all three, as I have kept my JOD membership as well as my GV Jazzercise membership. What is so great is that I can even do it on vacation. Not that I have been taking any huge vacations lately (we usually travel quite a bit), but I have done Jazzercise online on the deck of a rental house in Graegle and also in Sea Ranch. I could even see whales from the deck, while jazzercising with my Grass Valley buddies. How special is that? I have two daughters in the Bay Area and four grandchildren, including a granddaughter born on September 11, 2020. The others are 7, 4 and 2 1/2. What fun they are. We didn't visit for the first three months of the pandemic, but now we are seeing them every couple of months. I have even done Jazzercise from each of their houses. That's technology and Jazzercise for you! See more

Spotlight on Denise Losee My Jazzercise story began around 2002 when I saw an advertisement for Jazzercise. At that time, we were downtown above Caroline’s Coffee. I had been looking for a stress outlet. For ten years prior I danced and took aerobics, so it seemed like the perfect program. Dance and performance have always been a passion of mine. When I walked into my first class everyone was so very friendly. Patsy Hannebrink came up to me and welcomed me. That is something ...I have never forgotten. And of course, the dance was and is what I wanted and needed. I do not have a favorite song. I love musicalmost all music! When I dance, it pulls my life together. It makes my stress easier to handle and helps me to stay on my healthy eating habits. Recent events in my life, and the world as a whole, have brought to my attention the fact I need to focus on keeping my health and attitude at its best in order to be able to care for others in my life. During this time of staying at home, I have begun cooking more (more sugar-free recipes). I have started making plans to spend more time at the gun range taking classes this is something I really enjoy. I have also been cleaning and letting go of possessions that are not needed in my life. I am donating them to others who may need or want them. I have also been working on serious self-reflection and prioritizing the things and people in my life.
