Episode 30 of Creator Stories: Featuring Jimmy Jing Xia! . Looking back, I didn’t give much thought when I opened my Gumroad store. I thought it would be a nice way to earn a couple of dollars and get a coffee every now and then from occasional tips. Today, I can’t imagine what life would look like if I never decided to put myself out there on Gumroad. . I was one of the first digital artists to embrace a painting app called Procreate for full-time work. It wasn’t entirely a... choice, as I was frequently traveling and needed a functional and responsive painting app on the go. . I put a few of my brushes up on Procreate’s newly-opened forums and hosted them on Gumroad. I didn’t expect much, but figured that artists like my would benefit from my brushes. . Fast forward a year, and over 35,000 artists had downloaded my brushes and had been leaving me tips, reviews, and endorsements. Around the same time, I had returned to school and tuition was steep. All of my previous earnings as an artist were being swept away by expenses, fees, and more. I decided to upload all of my brushes and sell them together as a paid product on Gumroad. . After creating these brushes, I began to think of other ways to help artists improve their work. I wanted to create a series of products that made sense and had synergy with each other. . Gumroad is a very hands-on platform if you take advantage of all it has to offer. It allows creators to interact with the people who purchase their products, something that other marketplaces like Amazon’s do not offer, and this direct connection was the biggest factor that paved the path towards a successful store. Today, my sales from Gumroad has provided enough to be my full-time sole income. .
