Happy Humpday, growers! As we mentioned yesterday, lumens and PAR are important to understanding the effectiveness of a grow light on your plants. Specifically, though, there are four main reasons lumen output is so important in choosing the right grow light for you:... - More Lumens= Higher PAR: The brightness of your grow lights is good indicator of PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) output. - More PAR= More Intensity: Your lights should emit enough lumens for a strong enough PAR for plants to go through the photosynthesis. With more more intensity you'll get deeper penetration through leaves. - The Right PAR Takes the Right Brightness: In order for you to get the PAR that's perfect for your plant, you'll need to make sure it's got the brightness (i.e. lumen output). -Too Much Intensity Can Ruin Crops: Now, don't get into the trap of thinking more intensity is better. Unless properly maintained, too much lumens for a plant/growing area will impede on a healthy growth cycle, and produce healthy and bountiful crops. As you can see, it's increasingly more important to consider lumen output than wattage when looking for the right grow light for you. #lumens #PAR #PPFD #brightlight #bright #sun #growlight #growlights #indoorgarden #growyourown

We’ll start off with the basics. In order to understand lumens, you have to know what they are. Put simply, lumens measure the amount of light that a light source (like a grow light bulb) emits per second. This light emitted by a source is called its luminous flux (if you want to get really technical), and it’s the light power perceived by the human eye. There are wavelengths of light that we cannot see, but lumens measure what we can. The measurement is based on the Internat...ional System of Units’ measure for visible light, which is called the candela. Let’s take a look at some specifics: Measurement of 1 Lumen 1 lumen measures 1 candela of light across 1 solid angle over 1 second. Measurement of 10 Lumens Using the information above, if a light bulb emits 10 lumens, that means it’s emitting 10 candelas across 1 angle per second. If all that science hurts your head, don’t worry. All you really need to know are two things: 1. The more lumens a grow light emits, the brighter it is. 2. Fewer lumens means you'll get a dimmer light. Now, brightness of a light doesn't necessarily mean it's effective for a plant. For example, a 20w bulb can give you 1600 lumens of light, which will fill an entire room. However, that light may not be strong enough to actually grow a plant. That's because a light is only good for growing if it's intense. The measurement of a grow light's intensity is its PAR, and that's the best way to measure a light's effectiveness on a plant. So why talk about lumens at all? Here's why: - The more intense a light is (PAR), the brighter it'll be (lumens). - Therefore, the PAR output of a given grow light will be based- in part- on its lumen output. LED grow lights normally aren't rated by there lumen output. That doesn't mean you can't see how bright it will be, though/ If you want to know how bright an LED grow light will be, all you have to do is look into the diodes. - Each diode has a chip, and each chip is a certain wattage, indicating how much power is going to the chip. The higher the wattage chip, the brighter the diode will be. The more diodes there are, the brighter that light will be. - Some chips- like the ones on Horticulture Lighting Group LED grow lights- are rated by their lumen output. So while PAR is most important, knowing the lumen output of an LED can be just as important. #lumens #PAR #PPFD #brightlight #bright #sun #growlight #growlights #indoorgarden #growyourown

If you’re new to the grow game, you might be wondering what on earth words like "lumens" and "PAR" mean, let alone how they relates to your grow room. Even if you’ve been growing for a while, you may not fully understand the roles lumens and PAR play in the overall development and health of your plants. Understanding these things can be a game changer in your grow room setup and process! Once you have a better grip on the terminology and science behind your grow lights, you’l...l be able to choose the best possible lights for your indoor garden. So this week we're going to go over lumens, PAR, and how they interact to give you the light your plants need for optimal growth. #lumens #PAR #PPFD #brightlight #bright #sun #growlight #growlights #indoorgarden #growyourown
