Ubumuntu translates as humanity. Today is the 26th anniversary of the genocide that saw over 1 million people murdered in 100 days. When Cardinal Roger Etchegary visited Rwanda on behalf of the pope in 1994, he asked the assembled church leaders, Are you saying that the blood of tribalism is deeper than the waters of baptism? One leader answered, Yes, it is. We need to honor our shared humanity today more than ever. Today our friends there cannot even leave their ho...mes to grieve together. Every year Rwanda has a week of mourning and lament where victims and perpetrators come together for reconciliation - they cannot do that this year so the grieving will be more intense. Please pray for Rwanda today and our global humanity for healing. King of the Universe, we lift up our hands to you and ask you to help us bear the burden of injustice. Grant us a discerning spirit to follow your path to justice. Equip us with your patience and your grace so that as we walk with those who suffer, we might strengthen and uphold one another. Amen.
