Groundswell Community Project 23.04.2021

We meet again in collaboration with Groundswell Community Project this Sunday 4/11 - 9:30am at Ocean Beach Dog's Beach. We'll welcome in Spring by honoring our ...long winter journey and plant seeds of intention for the new season. Our sessions provide an uplifting way to be with the very natural experience of grief and loss... our group embraces the many ways loss has impacted over the course of 2020 and this new year. Bring any gear you might like for the water time - going into Mother Ocean is optional. Some choose to walk her shore, get feet wet, boogie board, swim, and even surf. Have questions? Contact [email protected]

We spend our "Winters" in Perú, our Spring season training our facilitators and volunteers, our Summers in the states facilitating a wide range of private and open surf therapy sessions, and our Fall season fundraising to provide more scholarships and make more Surf Therapy resources accessible for every girl and woman seeking Mother Ocean and surf-sisterhood.

Rachel is a powerhouse. Between her graduate studies in somatic psychology, leading yoga experiences, her work in flower essences and tarot, she is filled to the brim with so much wisdom and fire to share with the world. To understand the impact of Mother Ocean’s healing we must acknowledge two things first... There is much about the trauma and pain that has been interwoven into our collective history that needs to be acknowledged and addressed & Access to clean water, beaches, and surf isn’t possible for millions of people. This is true around the world, including in regions where surf is historically and culturally rooted from and, specifically, in American communities of color.... So we are honored to feature, GiGi Lucas, founder of SurfearNEGRA, a 501c3 organization focused on bringing cultural & gender diversity to the sport of surf. Join us in celebrating the extraordinary work that GiGi and the @SurfearNEGRA team has done and continues to do for the next generation of girls and children in St. Augustine, Florida, the surf community, and the work she’s inspiring for others to advocate and support all over the world. It's Time! The plastic pollution ocean conservation conversation has historically been dominated by white, middle to upper-class coastal dwellers. During an election year, now more than ever, it is vital that we do our work to overcome barriers and welcome accessibility and sustainability to diversify the conversation. We know that real change happens when all voices are included, educated, elevated, and celebrated. So this #NoPlasticNovember we are collaborating with our pa...rtner local orgs that directly work with BIPOC, inland, and immigrant communities so we can learn from each other, overcome barriers together, and get creative with saving what we love...mother ocean! Our home of San Diego, California rests on the lands of the Kumeyaay. Our golden California Coast, known for its extraordinary surf and terrain, once experienced a thriving environmental and indigenous cultural existence that has since changed drastically. One example of the environmental impacts due to colonization is the disappearance of Tule --a water-loving plant that our Indigenous CA ancestors / original land stewards used for mats, baskets, houses, and boats. Tule h...as faced a multitude of threats due to drastic landscape changes over the past two centuries. As cultural practices were lost, so were the once abundant resources. Reclaiming the ancient relationship of ocean culture, our brothers and sisters like Native Like Water and Un Mar De Colores, aim to reconnect our younger generations to their roots in Mother Ocean. As we honor the wisdoms and efforts of the ancient and living indigenous people, we acknowledge our role in advocating for and furthering our environmental and social justice practices-- in the ocean, in our Surf Therapy programs, in our voting decisions. We proudly work with organizations like Native Like Water and Un Mar De Colores and stand alongside our community to reconnect/ connect us all back to Mother Ocean's healing waves of love. Do you know the cultural origins of where your home surf break resides? Check out the link for the Surfer article and map https://bit.ly/WhoseCoast

In honor of Indigenous People's Day on Monday, we're spotlighting the lands and cultures we're thankful to be inhabiting and have the opportunity to grow our Groundswell Community with. Perú The ancient seafaring peoples of Peru’s North Coast -The Virú, Moche, and Chimú- employed the ancient reed kayaks known as caballitos de totora, still used across Peruvian beaches to this day for subsistence fishing, to ride waves for sheer pleasure between fishing expeditions. ... Surfing was considered an elite practice in the early 1900s. However today the lineup is magnificently diverse. Peruvians of all ethnicities and social classes are rediscovering and finding their roots in Mother Ocean. Perú holds a dear place in our hearts, not simply because of the programs we hold with our local Surfsisterhood. But the stewardship and barrier shattering opportunities our community has had the blessing to learn and grow from in getting to call this land home during Peruvian summers. Have you met Jules, yet? We are so excited to be welcoming Jules to the Groundswell family as our new Operations & Finance Manager! On top of her vast skills, knowledge, and experience in non-profit operations, her deep connection and passion to protect & honor Mother Ocean ripples out into everything she does. Take a moment to meet Jules and feel free to reach out and say, "Hi" -- ?... As children we were always told to "go jump in the ocean- it will make you feel better." Mother Ocean has always made me feel better physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. As an Indigenous person with African ancestry, the ocean is a place free from prejudice and is therefore a place of refuge who treats all beings equally. In my culture, we refer to the ocean as our medicine. See more

On Sunday evening we received a DM from Rosalia and it struck us deeply. Rosalia shared a beautiful message about her longtime best friend (since childhood) Angie and kindly gave us permission to share it with you. Please read on and join us in sending Waves of Love and Gratitude to Rosalia, Angie and their families. ... "Hello there. I just wanted to send a message saying that I think that all You do for women is amazing and so needed. I’ll be sending in a donation soon in honor of my friend Angie Hansen who committed suicide last year. The news, as I’m sure you know, was devastating and heart breaking. She absolutely loved the ocean, she loved sisterhood and adventure and I chose your organization to raise a humble donation in her honor. I wish we would have found you earlier. I think she would not only benefitted but she would have LOVED it. Your organization is based on everything she was trying her hardest to instill in her life." -Rosalia Hermanas, we hope you know that you are not alone and that it is okay not to be okay. A list of resources are available in a link in our bio for you, a family member, a friend, anyone... September may be Suicide Prevention Month but the conversation continues long after.
