I found this chart to be fairly useful in understanding how detoxification actually works.

Here’s what happens when you Google images for #triggerpoints Do you notice anything interesting?? There are no actual pictures of triggerpoints because they’...ve never actually been visualized or seen anywhere in any one. There is no good evidence to date to support the existence of the traditional idea of triggerpoints. They have not been accurately defined, they cannot be accurately or reliably palpated, and randomized controlled trials that use patient blinding and placebo intervention controls find no difference between placebo and intervention groups. Yes people certainly have sore spots, but we have to stop telling everyone that they are full of trigger points that need to be released and are balling up their muscles causing dysfunction! There are other explanations for the sore spots that make more sense, (referred hyperalgesia and PNS sensitivity) but at the end of the day we genuinely don’t know what they are. What we do know is that they are extremely unlikely to be the traditional definition of triggerpoints.

This has some seriously cool implications.

Thanks to a new paper published March 27th, the long-held proposition of many fascia therapists and researchers, that there exists a body wide loose connective ...tissue system (e.g. called microvacuolar system by JC Guimberteau) , this proposition is currently being celebrated as a 'new discovery' by the prestigeous journal Scientific Reports by the Nature Publishing group: see www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-23062-6. The researchers, who call this tissue 'interstitium' suggest to consider it as an 'organ'. Already within the 2 days since publication in this journal the international public attention given to this article is impressive, see e.g. www.thedailybeast.com/meet-the-interstitium-the-largest-org or http://www.newsweek.com/interstitium-new-organ-cancer-human or https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_rel/2018-03/nlh-nh032318.php or https://youtu.be/ZQ4VHwdgY8w While I don't consider the proposition of the loose connective tissue as a body wide inter-connected organ as completely new :) , I must confess that I am intrigued by the new and fascinating details being made visible with the 'in vivo microscopy' available today. Several of the reported findings in this paper constitute indeed novel and valuable contributions to our field. This includes their identification of interstitial cells as 'fibroblast-like' yet with immunohistochemical features that usually characterize endothelial, lymphatic or mesenchymal stem cells; and also their observation of frequent an asymmetrical cell alignment along the collage fibers. I was also intrigued to read that those attached cells apparently lack the usual base membrane. I certainly look forward to the upcoming Fascia Research Congress in Berlin (www.fasciacongress.org) and to compare on site the endoscopic visuals from Guimberteau with the novel 3rd harmonic microsopy used by the keynote presenter Peter Friedl in his presentation, based on Friedl using an even more advanced imaging technology than his colleagues in this new paper. I took the liberty of now inviting the authors personally to this congress. It will be great to fuse their findings with those of Peter Friedl, Jean Claude Guimberteau, Helene Langevin, Gil Hedley, Jaap van der Wal and other likeminded investigators.

Are we really doing what we think we are doing? Always good to stay critical on yourself and see how you can improve as a therapist.
