Happy Earth Day, friends! This year's theme is "Restore Our Earth" that focuses on innovative thinking that can restore the world's ecosystems. As garden enthusiasts, you're doing a great job so far with your efforts.... If you grow your own food, you reduce what @earthdaynetwork calls, your "food print." This measures the environmental impact related to growing, producing, transporting and storing your food. Growing your own food knocks out potential pesticide use, supports soil health, requires no transportation from your garden to your table and more! Can you think of ways that home food gardens help restore our Earth? Leave us a comment.

Know your apple trees: Spur Bearing: Apples grow on small thorn-like shoots (called spurs), which grow evenly along the main branches. They bear fruit the second or third year. Most spur bearing apple trees are dense and compact. Tip Bearing: Produce very few spurs and are relatively uncommon. Fruit buds are found at the tips of long shoots produced the year before. The branches look sparse.... Partial Tip Bearing: Produce fruit on spurs from the previous year and on tips. Identifying what type of apple tree you have by where it bears its fruit, will help you prune it properly.

If you're unsure of your soil type and texture head over to the link below and check out a previous blog post of ours that explains how you can determine soil type and texture using a soil sample from your garden.
