How do you like to prepare your artichokes? I especially like the small ones boiled so that I can just about eat the whole thing. Farmer Paul
Farmer Paul's favorite type of salad: chilled #cokefarm yellow beets (boiled w salt, garlic & dill), leftover brown rice mixed with fresh dill, radishes, red onion, #soulfoodfarm olive oil, rice vinegar & a dab of mayo atop chopped #heirloomorganicgardens asian greens and #pinnacleorganic Romaine lettuce.
Little bit of everything today...
We have sold out again, amazing! Thanks to everyone who shows up early from all parts of the Bay Area. Nothing left but free flowers, sorry.

First CSA member to post a picture on our page of something from LAST week's box (like kohlrabi!) wins a free Greenhearts trucker hat (you choose the color!) with their next delivery. Go!

A lot of #GreenheartsFamilyFarm produce went into this Lasagna and salad : Lasagna with kale, spinach, delicata squash ( yes, one of those of last year <3 ), lo...cal salmon and ricotta. Salad with butter lettuce, dandelion, red onion, radishes, arugula, mustard greens, cucumber. Nice dinner on this cold and windy evening. See more
Thanks to all the visitors today! Who knew that we would have an imprompt wildflower picking party? That was fun and so good for the soul. Happy families walking in our beautiful fields eating peas and picking flowers. That's the original spirit of Greenhearts Family Farm. An organic oasis for our community.
Come on out for the easiest veggie experience ever!
Is Farmer Paul the King of Cover Crops? No, no, just a Prince of Peas. #sustainability #GreenHeartsFamilyFarm #organicfarming #covercrops #greenmanure #GrowGrass
Experience the Romanesco!
This was not easy. Week 5 #GreenHeartsFamilyFarm #csabox ...a syllabus on how to eat locally and seasonally and a true accomplishment for organic farmers.
There's been a few major windstorms in the past weeks but we have survived relatively unscathed. Wind is the scourge of the tenant farmer. Our shoestring budgets and short-term leases preclude the construction of permanent buildings that would be less worrisome in ferocious gales. Visit any family farm and they typically resemble shanty towns but less organized. Tarps, old sheet metal, cast off lumber held together with rusty nails, baling wire and prayer. Mostly prayer, actu...ally. Plastic hoop houses are like giant trash bags on stilts ready to set aviation records for spontaneous and prolonged flight. It’s heartbreaking to see your long caterpillar tunnels laboriously erected fly off into the sky like balloons at a kid’s birthday party. Over a decade I’ve had whole chicken tractors fly away in storms probably making its feathered occupants unsettled if not a little wistful for the aerial acrobatics. I’ve seen old barns flattened and water towers toppled. Seeing all your planting trays and farm detritus scattered over your fields, the drip tape hopelessly tangled leaves a hollow feeling in your gut, a sense of hopelessness that your work, your time, your hard earned bucks just disappeared into thin air. But, I am wiser for it. We keep our eyes on the weather forecast and make every effort to batten down the hatches, safely securing our big tent, weighing down anything that might harbor notions of escaping its earthly bounds. All this is necessary if we want to get to the real work of packing and delivering boxes... in steady rain. Working outside has been essential in reducing the risks of transmitting Covid, but no one enjoys toiling in the rain and wind. I’ve been encouraging and we have incredibly dedicated employees, but I feel for them. It’s a tough haul. So, I put on the slickers and stay by their side. We emphasize safety. Camaraderie will see us through. Winter is always difficult for our local farmers and we are blessed to have harvests to share. Globally resourced supermarkets give us a false impression of what is actually growing within our food shed here in the Bay Area, and certainly gloss over the hardships of cold weather agriculture. So, please be especially thankful for the efforts of your farms, appreciative of the lengths taken to ensure high quality, fresh and delicious produce all year long. Learning to eat what the season’s give you is the gift of belonging to a CSA. It’s a journey. Nothing is guaranteed. We’re desperate for rain and grateful for work. Somehow, against all odds and despite the onslaught of the elements fire, flood, wind farmers persevere. The more I farm, the more farmers I meet, the greater my appreciation. Farmer Paul
