Food for thought...... Five Foods May Help With Retaining Good Vision. The Huffington Post Share to FacebookShare to Twitter (5/16) reported the National Eye Institute’s Age-Related Eye Disease study provides the recommended doses of vitamins and proteins that have been shown to improve vision. The Post lists recommended food products that contain those nutrients, including orange juice, which has vitamin C that promotes healthy ocular blood vessels, and can reduce the risk ...of nuclear cataracts, according to the American Optometric Association; oysters, the best source for zinc, which enables vitamin A to produce melanin to protect the eyes and improve night vision; cooked kale, which is high in two antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin that are also found in the eyes; peanuts as they contain vitamin E, which can delay cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, and the omega-3 fats DHA and EPA, which have been found in low levels among individuals with diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases; and quinoa because research has shown that a low-glycemic diet could reduce the risk for AMD by 8 percent. We can always use an excuse to eat, right? ~ Dr. April

Here's a great excuse to get your "beauty sleep" post by Dr. April One Week Of Inadequate Sleep May Alter Activity Of Hundreds Of Genes. Bloomberg News Share to FacebookShare to Twitter (2/26, Lopatto) reports, "Just a week of inadequate sleep can alter the activity of hundreds of genes, which may help scientists explain how wakeful nights can lead to ailments such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease," according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Acade...my of Sciences. Although "not all of the altered genes have known functions, some are involved in metabolism and stress response." HealthDay Share to FacebookShare to Twitter (2/26, Dotinga) reports that investigators "recruited 26 volunteers who spent a week getting a normal amount of sleep (8.5 hours) and a week getting less than normal (5.7 hours). The participants were still able to enter periods of deep sleep." The investigators "then studied the genes of the participants in blood samples and found that numerous genes, including some related to metabolism, became less active." BBC News Share to FacebookShare to Twitter (2/26, Gallagher) reports, "Meanwhile the natural body clock was disturbed - some genes naturally wax and wane in activity through the day, but this effect was dulled by sleep deprivation." The Daily Telegraph (UK) Share to FacebookShare to Twitter (2/26, Collins, Correspondent) reports, "Although a week's normal sleep was enough to restore the affected genes to their normal pattern, researchers said that prolonged periods of sleeplessness could lead to serious health problems including obesity and heart disease." The Daily Mail (UK) Share to FacebookShare to Twitter (2/26, Innes) also covers the story.
