In the early morning the Hawaiian Chieftain was approaching the Harbor entrance. What a beautiful sight, especially if the viewer could immediately imagine what it would have been like in the 1800s. The Hawaiian Chieftain is a 103-foot square-rigged topsail ketch owned and operated by Grays Harbor Historical Seaport. Built in Lahaina, Hawaii in 1988, she is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional design based on the European trading vessels that called in Hawaii during... the 18th-century. Each year Hawaiian Chieftain sails the West Coast from British Columbia to San Diego in company with the Lady Washington providing Voyage of Explorers sailing and dockside educational programs. This hands-on-history program teaches 4th & 5th grade students about the exploration of the west coast during the 1790s. On weekends, the ships offer dockside tours and cannon battle sails. Hawaiian Chieftain and Lady Washington also offer Two Weeks Before the Mast, a crew training program, on a year round basis. Hawaiian Chieftain programs are designed to educate, excite, inspire and empower students and the general public. Hawaiian Chieftain also offers sail training and team building for adults, private charters and natural history cruises. Whoops!!! One appears to be missing its head. These were right out in front of the Cottage. Visit, sit on the deck and see for yourself. American White pelicans, Pelecanus erythrorhynchos are one of the largest North American birds. They are majestic in the air. The birds soar with incredible steadiness on broad, white-and-black wings, sometimes within inches of the water. Their large heads and huge, heavy bills give them a prehistoric look. On the water they dip their pouche...d bills to scoop up fish, or tip-up like an oversized dabbling duck. Sometimes, groups of pelicans work together to herd fish into the shallows for easy feeding.
