Red Alert: ACA 7 Would Exacerbate the Housing Crisis Please help C.A.R. voice its opposition to ACA 7 (Muratsuchi). This bill would exacerbate the housing crisis by enabling restrictive local land use policy that will widen our state's wealth gap and economic and ethnic segregation -- even allowing local governments to impose radical rent control. We need your voice now. Watch a video to learn more . Please join us in this Red Alert - it will take you less than a minute to do this!

IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CONTACT: Steve Whitmore October 20, 2020 Office: (213) 974-3101 [email protected] Mobile: (213) 407-0650 COUNTY OFFICIALS WARN AGAINST PROPERTY TAX SCAM Scammers Going to Taxpayer Homes to Collect Property Tax Payments... LOS ANGELES, CA - Los Angeles County Treasurer and Tax Collector Keith Knox and County Assessor Jeffrey Prang are alerting the public to a property tax scam under the guise of COVID-19 that has been reported to a District Office of the Assessor. It’s being reported that unknown people are attempting to fraudulently collect in-person property tax payments at taxpayers' homes because of COVID-19. The individuals may even have fake identification as well as the tax bill for the specific homeowner in question. These individuals allegedly are claiming that the homeowner must pay their property taxes in-person because the COVID-19 pandemic has closed County offices to the public. Please note that the County of Los Angeles Treasurer and Tax Collector (TTC) does not conduct in-person visits to collect property tax payments and that any attempts to collect in-person payments are fraudulent, said Keith Knox, Los Angeles County Treasurer and Tax Collector. Should you be contacted at your home or hear about this in your neighborhood, do not make payment to the person requesting it and notify local law enforcement immediately. Be sure to provide a detailed description of the individual. Assessor Prang agreed, saying that residents need to be aware of this scam and not to engage with anybody seeking an in-person property tax payment. It’s important to be cautious with anybody making unsolicited offers, Assessor Prang said. Appraisers sometimes will visit homes to appraise the property but our appraisers will never ask for tax payments. This current activity is a scam and it's important to report it to the authorities immediately. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the TTC and Assessor offices are closed to the public and the TTC is not accepting in-person payments. The TTC accept payments online, by mail, or over the telephone. For details on available property tax payment options, visit ttc.lacounty.gov. For Assessor information go to assessor.lacounty.gov. Assessor Prang was first elected in 2014 and re-elected in 2018. He runs the largest office of its kind in the nation, employing 1,400 people with an annual budget cresting near $200 million. The 2020 assessment roll topped out near $1.77 trillion and provides about $17 billion in vital public services. Sept. 30 is deadline to complete 2020 Census. If you haven't done so, please take about 10 minutes to be counted today! It's fast and easy to complete the Census questionnaire! The 2020 Census counts every person living in the United States and five U.S. territories and provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use to provide daily services, products, and support for you and your community. Every year, billions of dollars in federal fu...nding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on census data. The results of the Census also determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, and they are used to draw congressional and state legislative districts. Complete the questionnaire online here: https://my2020census.gov

Beware of EDD Fraud! From the desk of Assemblyman Lackey Hundreds of Californians have reported receiving mail from the EDD addressed to someone who does not live there. A constituent in California City has received over 200 incorrectly labeled pieces of mail with many containing debit cards meant for other people. See the report from my Facebook page here. This continuous oversight on behalf of the EDD must come to an end. ... Independent investigators of the mail expect that much of it is fraud: people around the country start by utilizing home addresses of others who are moving. They then send unemployment information and benefits to homes where they believe they can get to the mail before homeowners do. In many cases, these con artists have stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from people who need it most. See the LA Times article here. In partnership with some colleagues in the State Legislature, my office has called for an emergency audit of the Employment Development Department in order to get to the bottom of this carelessness. In the meantime, if you or someone you know is receiving mail from the EDD that is not properly addressed, please turn it into my office by calling 661.267.7636. If you live outside of Assembly District 36, please contact the EDD Fraud Line at 800.229.6297. If you need any further assistance with your benefits or are not receiving them at all, please contact the District Office. Thank you for your continued trust, it is an honor serving you in the State Legislature.
