A few days ago, I found out about a huge loss. With all due respect to this wise man, Robert Harrison who was the best supervisor I’ve had in my journey to becoming a therapist. As a person of color, it doesn’t come easy to discuss and process challenging issues surrounding intersectionality and the impact this has to one’s mental health. This man welcomed me and my bringing up issues surrounding racial, class and gender including my own experiences of oppression as a WOC... therapist by putting aside white fragility and by listening, empathizing and making me feel safe, secure and protected each and every-time. I truly truly felt safe with you. Thank you. I am the therapist that I am because of you, your kind candor, patience, wisdom and grace. I will never forget those moments when you held my vulnerabilities when our work with patients got tough and I felt loss and cried my eyes out.
