Given all the rumors and slanders about this business, we want to set the record straight. In 2016 we were forced to drop live music due to excessive licensing fees from ASCAP, SESAC and BMI. Total licensing fees would have been nearly 15,000 dollars. In order to avoid a lawsuit, we scaled down to just dj’s which is much cheaper in ASCAP’s crazy licensing schemes, getting our fees down to 5,000 dollars for the three agencies. Since then, there was a slow and steady decline in... business. In addition, most of our lower income clientele who worked in the service industry could no longer afford SF and moved away. We were not successful in drawing more affluent demographics. In June 2019 our business fell off a cliff. Bay Area visitors simply stopped coming to North Beach. Since the building owner is the owner of the business, we stopped paying rent in June of 2019. We were preparing for a remodel and to go back to live music with artists signing a contract not to perform copyrighted music. But then the coronavirus situation came and by mid February, we decided to delay the launch of live music to a more suitable time. By the beginning of March we notified staff of the possibility of closure, wanting to give them plenty of time to prepare. We gave three weeks notice. Then by 3/10th things were getting crazy and it was a health and safety issue to close, not a business issue. We sped up closure and used all available funds to pay out employees, including funds for sales tax, property tax, city permits and vendor payments. Even that wasn’t enough so the owner made a 10,000 capital contribution. We hope to reopen in May or June. At this point after the soft story program and all the financial hell that the city has put us through, I may just give up though. See more
This is why we closed. In 1918 a St Patrick’s celebration caused a massive outbreak of the Spanish Flu. Pub crawls right now are irresponsible. We love St Patrick’s Day, our employees need the tips and we need the money to pay bills. But in the interest of public safety we chose to close. We urge the government, media and public to take social distancing seriously. https://www.washingtonpost.com//pandemic-parade-flu-coron/
We have sent the following message to journalists at hoodline and ask them to edit or remove their slanderous article immediately. You say that you tried to contact me in your article? No one contacted me. Then you post a link to someone I don’t even know slandering me. You call this journalism? I announced that we were closing for coronavirus on 3/24 to employees on 3/10. After Tom Hanks and the NBA, I decided it was not safe to open for a pub crawl on Saturday 3/14. On 3/...12 I talked to other business owners who refused to cancel the pub crawl. I then decided to close rather than put staff and customers at risk, including one staff member at high risk *********edited for hippa******. All employees were paid WITH a 30% raise for their hours through 3/24. I then paid out all sick pay WITH a 30% raise and severance to manager. In total over 17k was paid to employees OUT OF MY POCKET. If I am not totally bankrupted by the time this is over, I plan to reopen. See more
Grant and Green Saloon will be closing indefinitely due to coronavirus. We would like to thank patrons and staff for their loyalty. We are hoping that there will be relief for businesses like ours and our employees and that we will be able to reopen.
