Time to get familiar with @markdeclivelowe's stellar 20-year catalog for #FreedomFriday! Listen here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2Hl3eDvrico8zVoPE7DnQs "This playlist is an aural journey into my world," he states. "All the tracks are my own productions, releases and remixes across catalog from 2000 through to this year, from acoustic jazz improvisations to soulful house remixes and so much in between. There's collaborations with @omar_lyefook, @sheilaedrummer and @damf...unk, my remixes for @nubya_garcia, Shirley Horn, Ray Barretto and a whole lot more. Enjoy the sonic travels!" Japanese-New Zealander Mark de Clive-Lowe has been LA-based since 2008. Equal parts pianist, composer, jazz musician, live remixer and club music producer, he melds his love for improvisation-heavy jazz with electronica and sample culture, taking us from the jazz club to the dancefloor, and at times to a layer deeper, into his Japanese ancestry and roots. De Clive-Lowe has released twenty albums, and hundreds of collaborations and remixes, creating and collaborating with artists from all over the world exploring jazz, soul, world and club music. "Way before jazz hybridity became a worldwide phenomenon, de Clive-Lowe was busy designing its blueprint. - Jazziz Midnight Snacks vol.1 is MdCL’s latest offering - four tracks of lush instrumental broken beat, downtempo and house music out now on vinyl and digital exclusively via Mark’s Bandcamp. "Midnight Snacks are moments in time created in the dead of night - as the world sleeps, I get to imagine alternate realities. Through our imagination, we find new ideas and new possibilities, and share them in the hopes that we remind each other how things don’t have to be any one particular way. There’s always another perspective. #GrandPerformances #LosAngeles #DTLA #MarkDeCliveLowe #Playlist #Spotify #NewMusic

This #TBT highlights multi-faceted artist @lowleaf, who delivered a magical set for Grand Performances' Heritage Square Series in 2020. Rooted in classical piano since early childhood, Low Leaf is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, and producer who combines an array of genres by playing the harp, keys, singing, and producing beats. This 'Feature Presentation' was filmed inside the Perry House at Heritage Square Museum. Built in 1876 by lumber baron William Hayes Perry and designed by architect E. F. Kysor, the Perry House is an iconic example of classic Greek Revival Italianate. Originally located in Boyle Heights, it was arguably the finest and most expensive residence yet seen in Los Angeles. #GrandPerformances #LosAngeles #DTLA #Harpist #Music #LiveMusic #Singer #Musician #LowLeaf

#TBT to 2007 when both the Paulist Choristers of California and Sinfonia Orchestra graced the Grand Performances' stage to celebrate the 4th of July. The 40 member co-ed Paulist Choristers of California is renowned for its extraordinary young singers and its musical canon. The group’s emotionally moving vocals have been felt on soundtracks from films such as The Mission, Edward Scissorhands and Oscar & Lucinda. This presentation was a celebration of the nation’s birthday with the always impressive Sinfonia Orchestra featuring works from Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, and Leonard Bernstein. #GrandPerformances #LosAngeles #DTLA #Orchestra #PaulistChoristers #SinfoniaOrchestra #LiveMusic #Concert

Celebrate this #FreedomFriday with good vibes provided by @dj_raquel on Spotify! Listen here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3HSaWLNUc25LW7rBuzRcDv His playlist is a dedication to musicians who have reignited a soul sound of an L.A. past, and their contemporaries all over the country and world. When the pandemic is over, he hopes to see them live at Grand Performances in the heart of the city he is proud to call his forever home. ... The L.A. native and music-obsessed, James Rockwell aka DJ RaQuel, grew up under the tutelage of some of L.A.'s most outstanding music selectors. After two decades of prominence in the music scene, he is likely your favorite L.A. DJ's best friend. These days he is a rare, but worthwhile dance floor curator, if you happen to catch him with his best friend and long-time party partner, Future Paris. He spends his time now managing the careers of two L.A.- based indie artists, SWIMM and Sarah Walk, along with national brand campaigns, a budding car collection and a yet to be announced high-fi sound cocktail bar... and making barbecue ;) #GrandPerformances #LosAngeles #DTLA #Playlist #Spotify #PlaylistCurator #NewMusicFriday See more

Get ready for the weekend with @deanzamusic's colorful #FreedomFriday playlist. Listen here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5zvtnPbEOuodMUhMFKp3RQ Currently living in the Mexican Caribbean, artist and producer/multi-instrumentalist De'Anza curates a playlist strewn with Latin tribal, jungle, folklore and a hint of some of her favorite female MCs.... De’Anza, an artist and producer/multi-instrumentalist, is known for creating an eclectic mix of music sourced from various ends of the musical spectrum. Taking cues from traditional styles and landing somewhere between the hypnotic and the primal, she crosses borders and boundaries, resulting in a new fusion. As a producer, she is known for mixing live instruments with electronic beats and samples, delivering an inviting harmonic experience for audiences and listeners. Originating from Santa Fe, New Mexico, an area defined by convergent cultures and rich folk art, De’Anza initially journeyed west to Los Angeles on a mission to develop her own musical identity and connect with the global music scene. Her emergence in the industry was quickly met with critical praise, and local fanfare. The 2015 release of her debut EP Despertar, catapulted her from obscurity to Latin Alternative’s New Leading Lady as proclaimed by Southern California’s OC Weekly. With spotlight features on CNN, appearances on ABC’s Vista LA, and segments on popular radio outlets such as NPR, De’Anza has been turning heads and gaining fans domestically and internationally. In 2020, De'Anza relocated to the Rivera Maya, where she began an ambitious project that has sought to capture vignettes of the various soundscapes she encountered daily in her travels and excursions. Using sampling as a medium, she has encapsulated and combined a mosaic of candid audio and sounds of "real life." She has plans to expand the songwriting and production as she travels further into Mexico. Her new track "Playa" is due out May 14. #GrandPerformances #LosAngeles #DTLA #Spotify #Playlist #NewMusicFriday #LatinMusic #Folklore #Musician See more

Missing Friday nights out? Grand Performances presents a #FreedomFriday playlist with Los Angeles bar and venue @hellostrangerla that will transport you back to the dancefloor with an assortment of oldies, Pfunk and Latin Soul tracks. Click here to listen: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5YdJ26BpEkyW9iKdrFJ5bH Hello Stranger is more than just a song, (a nod to Barbara Lewis’1963 hit single), it’s a feeling. It’s a reverent throwback to a time where the crackling of a rec...ord spinning filled the living room. It's a gift from nostalgia re-imagined through a modern lens-- an oasis from the noise, the "bad vibes and bullsh*t." Why Hello Stranger loves these songs: While our inspiration comes from memories of the past, we’re here to make memories for the future. These songs carry with them a timeless groove that we would love to hear while cruising down Whittier Blvd., or Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll-ing under a Cali sunset. Some of our all-time favorites, some artists and labels we've had the pleasure of working with, and some we'd love to team up with ;) #GrandPerformances #DTLA #playlist #music #spotify #newmusic #radio #hiphop #instamusic

Grand Performances presents an eclectic playlist curated by Anamaria Ramos (@cestlanin) for #FreedomFriday. Listen now at the #LinkInBio! Second-generation native Angeleno and DJ Anamaria Ramos curates a mélange of Space Age Pop, Psych Rock and Jazz intended to help ground listeners during the ongoing pandemic. Anamaria is a second-generation native Angeleno with an innate connection to creative expressions. As a child she wished her future profession to be a colorer an...d spent afternoons incessantly turning radio knobs, exploring every radio station, feeling through refrains, choruses, and bridges before actually knowing what they were. Today those same inclinations continue to reveal themselves through vinyl DJ sets, design, and daily interactions. She expresses, "It's hard not to separate oneself from what feels like the entropy of our current reality. The point isn’t to look for that disconnection, but to find a balance and grounding in the world before us. That’s what this grouping of songs represents to me." Sidenote: Anamaria also had a hand in re-packaging a 10-year anniversary re-issue of @teebs__' Ardour album. Generations of Native people have protested Columbus Day. In the forefront of their minds is the fact the colonial takeovers of the Americas, starting with Columbus, led to the deaths of millions of Native people and the forced assimilation of survivors. Today we commemorate Indigenous Peoples’ Day or Native American Day which has gained momentum and spread to states, cities, and towns across the United States. Berkeley, California, became the first city to make the change i...n 1992, when the city council renamed Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. In 2015 an estimated 6,000 Native people and their supporters gathered at Randall’s Island, New York, to recognize the survival of the Indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere. The demonstration’s success and the worldwide media attention it attracted planted the seeds for creating an Indigenous Peoples’ Day in New York City. Last year, the nation’s capital passed a resolution to change the holiday to Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Universities and schools across the country are also observing the new commemoration. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #NativeAmericanDay #NativePeople #GrandPerformances #DTLA

Grand Performances' Heritage Square Series concluded with a powerful uplifting performance from Soul and Jazz choir @thevoicesofcreation.. In case you missed it, you can watch the uplifting performance on GP's YouTube page! "When starting this endeavor, explains @jimettarose, "I had a whimsical theory that I wanted to test and hopefully prove. I imagined that each one of us was most powerful and most present and able to lead when singing our soul's truest note. You know t...he one planted in our hearts that we must boldly seek to find. I believe that that would make harmony more evident, and coexistence would be less painful, less full of this cacophony of misery... maybe by singing together we can learn to listen and blend our sharper edges with one another. Singing of our collective hopes for tomorrow, we can surely build days and ways of peace for our children and those to come." #GrandPerformances #DTLA #Uplift #JimettaRose #VoicesOfCreation #Choir See more
