Your Dentist Knows Your Secrets My wife, Stacy, is a dental hygienist. One of the things I’ve learned from her is that, when we’re sitting in the dental chair, ...our mouths reveal more than we probably realize. Most obviously, smoking leaves telltale stains on our teeth. What’s more, up to 90% of systemic diseases, like diabetes, have oral manifestations. Everything from swollen gums, to bone loss, to dry mouth, to mouth ulcers are warning signs of deeper and more serious issues. Our mouth, in other words, is the window to the rest of our body’s health. It reveals our secrets. This is true not only physically, but spiritually. Jesus says that the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile a man, (Matthew 15:18). What things? Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders, (v. 19). Quite the nasty list. These come from the heart, but they’re revealed orally. As Jesus says elsewhere, The mouth speaks what the heart is full of, (Luke 6:45). If our mouths are the window to our heart’s health, then things are not looking very good for us. When I look back over this week, I realize just how much my mouth revealed my heart. And what it revealed was an ugly mass of cardiac cancers. Oh Lord, forgive me. Forgive all of us. For our needless profanity. For our self-serving flattery. For our mean-spirited political fights. For making fun of others. For our imputing evil motives to others. For all our words that are laced with lies, half-truths, insincerity, and coldness. And fill our mouthsand heartswith your grace and Spirit. Make our hearts the lexicon of your love, that out of our hearts may come verbs of truth and nouns of mercy. O Lord, open my lips, that my mouth may show forth Thy praise, (Ps. 51:15).
