In the depths of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously declared: The country needs, and unless I mistake its temper, the country demands bold, persistent experimentation. As the urgency to take action on climate change grows, the country demands a plan bold enough to meet the complex challenges it faces. Developed through a consortium of more than 50 of the country's leading experts, the Zero Carbon Action Plan fills this urgent need with detailed p...olicies on everything from jobs, electrification, industry, transportation and equity. Please join the Sustainable Development Solutions Network USA and the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy on Oct. 27 at 9 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) for a presentation of this landmark plan which will be delivered to the U.S. government. The launch will be led by two contributing faculty members, SDG Policy Initiative Director Gordon McCord and Deep Decarbonization Initiative Co-Director David Victor. In contrast with the past, when space was dominated by a few major powers, space is becoming much more democratized with more countries and companies engaging. For the U.S., this increasing activity presents risks and opportunities, particularly in Northeast Asia. China is pursuing weapons that could threaten critical U.S. space-based systems, and alliessuch as Japan and the Republic of Koreaare developing space security assets of their own, which can enhance and add resiliency to U.S. capabilities. As these countries acquire and rely more on space systems, the space dynamic will play an increasingly important role in the region. Turnout in local elections is generally abysmal. Nationwide only about a quarter of eligible voters participate in local contests. In these low turnout affairs, residents over 65 are almost three times as likely to participate as those under 25. Whites and the wealthy are also greatly overrepresented. The result is that local outcomes reflect the will, not of the majority, but of a small and unrepresentative minority. GPS Professor Zoltan Hajnal's research has proven this, a...nd it’s having a real-world impact. A small but dedicated group of local New Jersey residents reached out to Prof. Hajnal to seek his support in their efforts to put the issue of local election timing on the November ballot. With a simple majority vote, residents of Ridgewood, New Jersey, will be able to return local elections to November. In this op-ed, Prof. Hajnal shows others in NJ how they can do the same: http://ow.ly/zenC50BSwcN
