While the weather doesn't say Spring, the calendar does. Many of us are sprucing up our gardens or planting some delicious edible plants. Here are some things we do during this time of the year for our client's properties that you can try in your home gardens to ensure you're efforts yield the most optimum conditions for the health and longevity of your plants: 1. Dig a good hole, wide enough so that the roots can spread into their natural position and deep enough so the cro...wn (where the roots meet the trunk or stem) will be at the soil line. Planting too high or too deep stresses the plant and threatens its long-term health. 2. Be sure to massage the root ball of the plant to loosen the compacted soil and roots to promote new growth and even access to water and nutrients. 3. Backfill around the loosened root ball with soil and add water to be sure the soil settles into all areas and prevents air pockets from remaining. 4. Rooting will generally occur in 3-4 weeks but some plants may take longer. Planting needs may vary based on specific plant species.
