On the heels of last night’s history event, we’ve got even more about Lillie Coit to share with you! This photo is from the dedication and unveiling of the Volunter Fire Department Memorial, sculpted by Haig Patigian and funded by the estate of Lillie Hitchcock Coit. Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower are in the background. This statue depicts three members of San Francisco’s Volunteer Fire Department, which existed from 1849-1866. Coit herself was an honorary member of Knickerb...ocker Engine Co. No. 5. This statue was created after her death and was installed in 1933 in Washington Square, North Beach, where it still stands. Thanks to @OpenSFHistory for sharing this great image! #gotcsf #gotcsfmuseum #sfhistory #firehistory #sffd #sffdhistory

It’d be tough to find a bigger fan of the San Francisco Volunteer Fire Department than Lillie Hitchcock Coit! In this highly romanticized portrait, Lillie carries hose and a speaking trumpet while wearing the helmet of Knickerbocker Engine Company No. 5, her favorites! Learn more about Lillie at our upcoming special event. ... (Alexander E. Anderson, Lillie Hitchcock Coit, oil on canvas, 1978. On this Super Bowl Sunday, did you know that the SFPD had their own football team? The Centurions were members of the SFPD and they used to play full contact football against other law enforcement agencies to raise awareness and funds for terminally ill children. Hope everyone has a safe and fun Super Bowl today! ... ( from the SFPD Yearbook, 1982. Collection of Guardians of the City) #gotcsf #gotcsfmuseum #sfpdhistory #sfpd #sfhistory
