Today we have a HotCurl shaped by Chris Darby and finished off with @tablapintura airbrush. The customer wanted something a little different then the custom stringer and foam stain that usually comes with the Hot Curl model. This one came out clean with a touch of flair. Happy Monday! Today we have a really rare one! We acquired this board a few weeks back and it is one of the oldest G&S models. We think it’s from the late 1958-59 era The old bubbles logo was one of the first @gordonandsmith ever had. Created by Mike Salisbury this was one of his earlier attempts at a design, only a small amount of boards were ever made with this logo. It wasn’t until 1960 that Mike would create the red and black bow tie logo that we all know so well! Mike ...would later go on to create the Levi Strauss logo as well as Jurassic Park and multiple rock and surf contributions. Windansea, Pacific Beach and Gordon and Smith! Many people associate G&S with Pacific Beach mostly because of Larry’s involvement with the original Tourmaline pro contest and the Pumphouse crew. G&S still continues to support the PBSC and know it’s importance. Ask anyone involved with coalition contests they’ll tell you how great they are by getting you involved with your local beach Community and to start competing. The friends and family gained throughout the coalition com...petitions lasts for years and years. Floyd Smith on the other hand had two older brothers who attended La Jolla High and surfed some of the local La Jolla reefs, one in particular called Windansea. As a young boy he knew some of the surfers that hung out and surfed the wave. Back then Windansea was a very locals only break where you had to know someone to be able to paddle out. Due to his brothers involvement Floyd was allowed to be a part of this elite group. He listen to their story’s and gained a lot of information about boards and how to ride them. (See Floyd’s story for more on his history) Windansea and Gordon and Smith have strong roots and are still involved today. Gordon and Smith try’s to be active in both Pacific Beach and Windansea Surf clubs. We feel It’s important to be a part of our local surf community. The Family atmosphere and being ambassadors of clean water is why we support surf clubs. Check out the coalition of surf clubs website for more info on a surf club near you!

The news of Ellen O’Neals passing is extra sad for us. She was part of the G&S family, and someone I personally looked up to as a young female skateboarder. I always admired her strength and grace in her freestyle routines and anytime I saw her skate. Her family needs our thoughts and prayers. Take a minute to remember her in your own way. The back story of Larry Gordon.... Larrys father owned a composite and plastics company called Gordon Plastics. From a young age he was continually exposed to an atmosphere of Scientific exploration, research and development. He saw first hand the excitement and benefits of new technology. His grandfather had been a Presbyterian minister and his father and uncles were seriously committed to the ethics of faith as they ran their business Gordon Plastics. It was while Floyd ...and Larry were talking about the new polyurethane foam board that Floyd had seen at Windansea beach, that George Gordon overheard them. He knew of this new foam and offered to get the materials for them to experiment with. Larry, Floyd and his brother Lee would chip in 200$ for the materials. Lee lost interest early but Larry and Floyd kept with it. There are different versions of the story but one version is George Gordon ordered a board from Hobie as big as Hobie could produce. Once they had their board, Larry’s dad would use his tool and ‘Die guy’ Chuck Foss to make a mold of this new type of surfboard. This quick youthful, on a whim decision would forever change both of Larry and Floyd’s lives. By 1959 their garage was turned into a full blown surfboard workshop. On the heels of yesterday’s post, here is another one of our teamrider/ ambassadors Mike Myers. Mike is our wildcard he rides everything from small thrusters to big ole single fins. Mike has a smooth style and as you can tell by the pics he charges. Currently Mike is riding a 9’6 HP and a 9’8 hybrid classic noserider that he and @woodisaac have been working on. We are stoked to have mike ripping for us. We make all styles of board for all styles of surfers. Team rider Tuesday! Here is @britsnii riding her high roller model shaped by @dominicpicone. we are stoked to have a female specific board specially made to fit the needs of lady. Although this model can be ridden by guys, it’s thinner rail and less volume makes this board perfect for those smaller surfers... The board is a little narrower with a thinner foil and lowered hips. Here is a little back story of Floyd Smith....... Floyd and Larry Gordon grew up in Pacific Beach. They were a year apart but hung out together with the same friends at the beach. Later they went to Mission Bay high school. Larry and Floyd ran track together and also worked together at Larry’s fathers company Gordon Plastics. Floyd was exposed to surfing at a much younger age then Larry because he had two older brothers who attended La Jolla High and knew some of the surfe...rs that hung out and surfed at Windansea. Back then Windansea was a very locals only break where you had to know someone to surf there. Due to his brothers involvement Floyd was allowed to be a part of this elite group. He listen to their story’s and gained a lot of information about boards and how to ride them. Floyd, at the mercy of his older brothers, also learned that information was more valuable then money. Floyd soon became the guy to talk to about surfboards and design. The first surfboard he ever rode was a Balsa lent to him by the Blankenship brothers in 1956. By 1958 he was buying old balsa boards cutting them down and reshaping them into the smaller 9’ range. During this time he found the best riding boards had bend in them which was later called rocker. When Floyd saw the first foam surfboard at Windansea beach he was ready and eager to try it. See more

Much easier to ride then the normal twin keel fish. We have found the summer fish is the perfect addition to that midsized quiver. The summer fish paddles like a bigger board and surfs with the ease of something smaller. These board transition from rail to rail seamlessly while keeping all pivot of a single fin! Board #20463 is shaped by @darbysurf with aqua blue air spray graphics by @tablapintura . The Modern Machine Its an outline from the 70’s and is a great all around board for all levels. It’s got more range than the egg and this one includes a single fin. The Modern Machine is a Super relevant shape in the midrange design group.
