CLASS OF 2021 GVCS Graduation will be held on May 22, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Mesa Union School in Somis, CA. Family and friends of the graduates as well as all GVCS parents and students are encouraged and welcome to attend. All of this year’s graduating students should have already received more information regarding participating in the graduation ceremony.

LAST CALL FOR STUDENT IDs Students desiring a school ID card will need to email a photo along with student name, date of birth, student ID # and address to Mary Deyo at [email protected]. GVCS will be charging a fee of $2.00 for the ID which will be deducted from your student’s instructional funds. NOTE: High School students are REQUIRED to have a student ID. If a High School student has a drivers license, this will be sufficient. The deadline for submission of these items is October 30, 2020. IDs will be mailed out as they are created.

SCHEDULED BOARD MEETINGS Our next board meeting is on Monday, December 14, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. in the GVCS office. This meeting will be held via Zoom. The link to attend can be found on the agenda which is posted to the school website 72 hours prior to the meeting. Parents are invited and encouraged to attend these meetings.

ARTISTS WANTED! All students are encouraged to participate in the 5th Annual Art Contest. Please have your student submit a maximum of two original pieces of art to the GVCS office between August 24 - January 29 for a chance to win a great prize and have your art displayed in the office and shared with the GVCS community. Guidelines ~ All art must be 2 dimensional and no larger than 20x24x1, maximum of 2 entries per student.

Submit Your Art!

PHYSICAL FITNESS TESTING FOR 5th, 7th AND 9th GRADERS Curl-ups, anyone? How about going for a jog? It’s never too early to prepare for the spring administration of the Physical Fitness Test! The Physical Fitness Test is required for all 5th, 7th, and 9th graders. The test takes approximately one hour, and is composed of the following activities: a 1-mile walk/run; abdominal curl-ups; push ups; trunk lift; and shoulder stretch. We will also measure the height and weight of each student. Please visit CDE's PFT page for more information about each test. Let’s get moving! The Physical Fitness Test has been suspended by Governor Newsom. While we will not be testing this year, it is still important to keep those students moving!!

CONGRATULATIONS MEI HOTTA-RECIPIENT OF THE NATIONAL YOUNGARTS AWARD! Mei Hotta, GVCS Senior, won the prestigious National YoungArts Foundation’s Honorable Mention Award 2020 in cello performance. She is one of 686 award winners, out of the 7000 entries. Mei started cello study at the age of four. She has been featured twice on NPR’s radio show, "From the Top". She was a semi-finalist of the 2017 and 2018 Stulberg International Competition and has won a number of similar compe...titions. She currently studies with Clive Greensmith at the Colburn Music Academy as a Thibaudet Fellowship recipient. Her previous teachers are Sarah Koo and Diana Parmeter. She is planning to pursue a music degree in college. She enjoys drawing, sculpting, and knitting when she’s not playing music. See more

The annual GVCS Spelling Bee is scheduled for Thursday, January 14th, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the GVCS office. Students in grades 3-8 are eligible and encouraged to participate! All grades will compete against each other (not grade level). This is a fun way to get practice in public speaking, spelling, and competition. If we are unable to hold the Spelling Bee in person due to health code restrictions, Scripps National Spelling Bee has created a new online testing platform whic...h will allow GVCS to virtually hold our Spelling Bee through an online platform. The GVCS winner will receive a Spelling Bee trophy or ribbon, be featured in the GVCS newsletter and website, and will advance to a regional spelling bee. The champion of the regional bee will continue on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Every GVCS contestant will receive a Certificate of Participation. To register for the GVCS Spelling Bee, please email [email protected] with your student’s name, grade level, and EF. The deadline to register is Monday, December 7, 2020. VENTURA COUNTY SCIENCE FAIR - IMAGINE A SUSTAINABLE PLANET The Ventura County SCIENCE FAIR & STEM EXPO is March 19, 2021. This year’s Science Fair will be held virtually. GVCS students are encouraged to participate! The Science Fair has come a long way since a handful of students competed in the first county science fair in 1955. Now with nearly 1,000 students in grades 6 - 12 participating, the science fair continues to experience tremendous growth, both in participation, sp...onsorship, and the development of the Science Career Expo, an interactive expo with a strong focus on local industry including biotechnology and agriculture. With categories from Animal Sciences to Physics, the science fair is designed to promote, encourage, showcase and reward the achievements of our students in the various fields of science. By developing skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, students are laying the groundwork for their future success.
