The Ridge Key Phoenix This sculpture was revealed this morning in Paradise, California. Created by Paradise artist Jessie Mercer (Key Project Tribute #unlockpos...sibilities), the sculpture weighs approximately 800 pounds and spans 7 1/2' tall by 7 1/2' wide. Jessie escaped the flames of the Camp Fire with her family on that fateful morning, November 8, 2018. Once safe, she noticed her dad holding his keys. That was the moment Jessie decided to build the Phoenix. With her dad's blessing and best wishes, along with his keys, she spent the next 12 months collecting various keys from all over. "We all had keys that no longer had a door. May it be to a lock, may it be to a safe, may it be to your home, to a business - the idea became limitless," Jessie said in a recent interview with a local news station. She started the project about a week after the fire. She sat out 13 different jars at 13 different businesses in Paradise, Magalia, Chico, Red Bluff and beyond. She drove 2 or 3 times a week to collect the keys, putting over 19,000 miles on her truck in 12 months. There were approximately 18,000 keys used to build the sculpture.
