The Golden Bridges' early childhood program includes one preschool class and two kindergarten classes. The first seven years of life are a time of growing into and taking hold of the body, and this process is nurtured through warm-hearted relationship, familiar and comforting rhythms, song, music and movement, time outdoors and social interactions with strong and clear boundaries. Children at this age learn best through direct experience and imitation of the intentional adul...ts around them. We provide an orderly rhythm of directed activities that mirror everyday life inside and outside. Ample free play fosters the imagination, and cultivates healthy social development that is child-lead and guided by the teachers when needed. The mood of the Early Childhood is that of reverence, festivity and gratitude as we engage in purposeful work and joyful play.

We are so excited to announce that we are now able to offer in-person, outdoor hikes, three days per week to our Kindergarten and Grade schoolers, to supplement their daily distance learning curriculum. Our teachers have been focused on outdoor education and leading hike days for each class for the past seven years, well before the COVID pandemic, so this is not new territory for us. We can’t wait to get back on the trail with the kids! Here is a summary of what we have been doing as faculty to address the current events and racial injustice as a whole: Kindergarten painting class gives a picture of upstanding for those in need, which mirrors the journey it takes for one to stand up for injustices in service of the whole and the oppressed. It's a difficult path, tempting to turn back, and sometimes you have to do it alone. Our farm and garden teacher gave a lesson with thoughtful questions poised to student...s in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade about Racial Injustice, Black Lives Matter movement and what action they will take to stand up for injustice. Pedagogical stories are being told to grades students that tie to personal experiences of teachers who are protesting. Anecdotes for context are being brought to help children make sense of what they are hearing is happening. In answering questions honestly and directly, and by telling stories that can lead to open-ended questions, teachers show what it means to take action in solitary for human rights, especially with protests. Teachers are holding space for silence in their classrooms to honor the lives lost at the hand of police brutality and anti-Black racism. As an arts-integrated school we draw and paint in every grade, every day. Our distance learning art and handwork teacher has invited students in the grades classes to learn about Angela Davis, social justice activist and author, and draw her portrait. Older grades are writing letters to the mayor and city officials with their teacher. These are just some of the ways that Golden Bridges teachers take a stance against anti-Black racism and stand up for dismantling systems of oppression. Our pedagogical roots are over 100 years old, inspired by Steiner schools, but we are renewing, reimagining, and reinventing the education children need today to be the activists and racial justice warriors of the future.
