CELEBRATING BEUYS 100 Few German cultural figures of the 20th century were as controversial as the action artist, sculptor, draftsman, art theorist and professor Joseph Beuys (1921 - 1986). His work dealt with a new, expanded concept of art that included the political co-creation of society. Beuys would have turned 100 on May 12th 2021. The Goethe Institut in the US is celebrating Joseph Beuys 100th Birthday with a series of four films, you are invited to join us. Free to st...ream in the US. Fri, 05/14/2021 and Sat, 05/15/2021 Live Performance | Stream THE NEW COMPASSIONATE DOWNTOWN By the Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD)... Presented by MOCA as part of ART RISE, a project of We Rise LA. Directed by: John Malpede and Henriëtte Brouwers. Visual Art by: Robby Herbst Cast: Stephanie Bell, Iron Donato, Tom Grode, Leyla Martinez, Lee Maupin, Matt Miyahara, Lorraine Morland, Clarence Powell, Dianne Prozeller, Anthony ToneTone Taylor, Maya Waterman Downtown L.A. has long been marketed as a nightlife destination. Los Angeles Poverty Department's "The New Compassionate Downtown" dares to imagine a downtown that attracts people who value the wisdom and compassionate practice exemplified by Skid Row workers and residents. In The New Compassionate Downtown, an alternative marketing approach touts downtown as "a place you can live guilt- and resentment-free. No longer will the subterranean guilt of ignoring privilege haunt you and, through psychological displacement, manifest itself as anger." Work on the performance began pre-pandemic and explores themes that have gained resonance in the past year. The setting is a meeting of "The New Compassionate Downtown," a diverse group of people living and working in all parts of downtown who embrace building a community of compassion. The performance interweaves the meeting with scenes that concretely explore compassion in action as life unfolds daily. The performance, staged in a socially distant manner by a cast of eleven performers, is live-streamed and recorded. Los Angeles Poverty Department is a performance group of people who live and work in Skid Row. All the cast members have contributed to this script. The New Compassionate Downtown was funded in part by the Mike Kelly Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts Theater, the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, the Goethe-Institut, the LA County Department of Arts and Culture, The BOX, and MOCA-Geffen. WHEN IS ART REALLY ART? Artificial intelligence making art puts a new spin on age-old questions, such as if AI art can really be called art, and who gets credit as the artist the machine, the programmer or the person whose data was fed into the algorithm. Next Couch Lesson: AI+ DEMOCRACY Wednesday, October 21, 2020, 08:00 AM ( PDT) via Zoom Democracy is one of humanity's most important achievements. But in recent years we have had to learn that it is by no means something we can take for granted. Anti-democratic tendencies in society are on the rise, elections are influenced by modern technology, disinformation and misleadingly altered images promote racist and sexist attitudes. Increasingly rapid developments in the field of ...Artificial Intelligence are blamed for filter bubbles, fake news, manipulation, discrimination, and increasingly efficient surveillance of people, and thus for the corrosion of fundamental democratic principles. One thing is certain: Intelligent computer programs and computer systems pose a challenge to democracy. The question, therefore, arises as to how we can minimize those aspects of AI that are detrimental to democracy and how we can use AI to support democratic activities and reinforce democratic institutions. Info and Zoom registration: https://us02web.zoom.us//tZcufuGqqzMtH9wZiC5TgdPPQQiir2xYx What you will learn: In what ways does AI challenge democracy? How can the damage-potential of AI technologies be minimized? Can AI also be deployed to promote democratic activities? THANK YOU! Our Shaping The Past Town Hall Monument Lab brought together internationally renowned artists, curators, historians, and activists whose work focuses on understanding our ways to remember historical events and how to change and expand those narratives in order to include forgotten and hidden voices of the past. During 2 afternoons, our panelists shared their thoughts on how what and who to remember in public spaces guided by questions from our moderators and the au...dience. There was a broad consensus about the need to reshape conventional historical narratives and develop an understanding for how they could be changed. We were thrilled by the engagement and the positive feedback we received and would like to send a heartfelt Thank You to all participants, our audiences, and the staff members.
