Pi Day, Online, A Pill for Piners of Pie March 14th, 2021; 3/14/21; otherwise known as Pi Day. Pi being the mathematical equation 3.14 (infinity) is often celebrated by eating pie! We held our first pi/pie day event at the Museum (located at 314 N. Glendora Ave) in 2019. It was a huge success with lots of happy people enjoying the Museum exhibits, and each other’s company, while eating pie. Regrettably, due to Covid, we had to cancel this event in 2020 and it is not looking favorable for an in person celebration in 2021. But this doesn’t stop us from celebrating in a different manner. Call a friend, family member and wish them Happy Pi Day. Be sure to indulge - get a pie and enjoy! Think about the Museum reopening soon and stay healthy! A Royal Valentine Wish from Rubel Castle For Valentine’s Day we messed around with the famous photograph of Heinz & Dorothy Rubel dressed as monarchs. Heinz’ ra...dio personality at the time was King Kill Kare, performing in his successful show during the National Bisquit Hour on NBC. Dorothy was the queen of Heinz’ heart, and little did they know in 1934 that she would be queen of her own son’s Castle.

Introducing the first online publication of a presentation from the Glendora Historical Society 40 minutes This online presentation clears up an old story about a "Frank Lloyd Wright" house built for silent film star, fan dancer, and Glendora resident Sally Rand. Was it made by Wright? Well, the roof leaked, which is a clue as to the pedigree of the structure, and proves that Castle-Builder Michael was Wright's equal as a designer-builder.... The idea of a home designed and built for Sally Rand by Frank Lloyd Wright persists as a legend in Glendora. Professor Steve Slakey of the Glendora Historical Society presents his research and sets this architectural story straight. This is the first online version of the Society's series of presentations, traditionally held at the Bidwell Forum of the Glendora Public Library.

Happiest of birthdays to a Glendora legend. Peggy Gardner Willison, 100 years old today. She was a Champion Highland Dancer in Scotland before coming to the US.... When Glendora chose the Tartan theme for the new High School, she taught the Highland Fling and the Sword Dance to to Drill team. Her Dancers, The Gordon Highlanders, continues to dance and compete under Kathy Eisel. Peggy continued to teach lessons at her home and finally gave up dancing herself at 82 due to an ankle injury. I took lessons for many years as did my daughters. So many warm memories. Thank you Peggy for everything See more

FAIRMOUNT PIONEER CEMETERY TOUR: On Friday October 9, David Fredendall, Trustee, gave me a personal tour of the grounds. He shared many interesting pieces of information, including: There are 255 names of those buried there but not all linked with a specific burial site so far. 90 plots are not matched with names. Some records had been lost in a fire in the 1940's; Huntington Library records may yield more names of those buried at Fairmount.

October 13, 2018 The Golden Spur Restaurant in Glendora, California closed abruptly. According to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Easterseals planned to repur...pose the former restaurant as a day facility for developmentally disabled or special needs adults. The restaurant started out in 1918 as a hamburger stand that patrons could ride up to on their horses. It was expected the sign would remain. See more

.. A portrait of Henry Scott Rubel, father of Castle-Builder Michael. Heinz studied to be an electrical engineer and in 1917,... when this likeness was taken, he entered the U.S. Navy and served as radio man aboard the minelayer U.S.S. Shawmut. He held the fastest Morse code speed record in the Navy for three years running, and was the central operator broadcasting the orders for conditions of the surrender of German vessels after Armistice. Aboard ship is where his career in radio and entertainment began, as he wrote songs and performed them for the troops. One of his songs, "Force of Mine," was made the official song of the North Sea Mine Barrage by Admiral Joseph Straus. See more

It has been rumored and written that Frank Lloyd Wright designed a home in Glendora for Sally Rand. While it is true that a house with a Wright pedigree once existed near the intersection of Sierra Madre Avenue and Glendora Mountain Road, the story is more involved and interesting than that. ... The Wright house was designed by a Wright disciple, constructed in Ontario, shipped in pieces, and, with a detour, finally assembled in Glendora. Please join the Glendora Historical Society meeting on Monday, September 28, at 6:30pm for the first online presentation by Steve Slakey in the public meeting. There are two ways to join: Click on this link https://zoom.us/j/94901892526 OR Go the www.glendoralibrary.org, scroll down to events, click on the listing for the GHS meeting, and then click on the Zoom link.
