What Do You See? by Bruce Butler Matthew 9:27-34 Growing up I used to think Mom had eyes in the back of her head. How could she see what I so smugly believed only I could see? But in humility I was secretly glad I had faith in Mom’s all seeing eyes that acted as a backstop for my immaturity.... We find that faith requires humility, especially faith in Jesus, because when we encounter life’s blind corners we can ruthlessly trust and tenaciously hold on to his plans and purposes for us. What two blind men discovered was that faith in Jesus changed everything for them. Jesus had been healing many people in Matthew 8 and 9. The blind men wanted it to be their turn, so they sought out Jesus with loud cries, asking for mercy. They knew who Jesus was. He was the Son of David, Messiah, God’s promised King, the One who could provide the mercy they needed. Jesus focused on the focus of their faith: Do you believe that I am able to do this? True faith always has a focus on the person of Jesus. Jesus required their faith be in him. Yes, Lord, they replied. Their faith lined up with Jesus’ plans for them: mercy, wholeness, restoration and salvation. Jesus touched their eyes and healed them according to their faith. Their lives were transformed, and even though Jesus wanted them to remain quiet for now about the miracle, they couldn’t contain themselves but spread the word about Jesus to everyone they met. So believe in Jesus and be transformed. Do you have eyes to see Jesus and a humble heart to trust in his salvation and healing? Tenaciously pursue mercy from Jesus. Jesus alone is worthy of your faith. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: How would you contrast the attitudes of the blind men who had spiritual sight with the Pharisees who were spiritually blind? Why does pride with all its certainty prevent us from having the faith Jesus says we need? What are some ways that faith in Jesus has changed everything for you? Why does it matter that you participate in a church or life group with others who are certain that Jesus alone is worthy of your faith?
