In November 2016, we performed our first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) at Adventist Health Glendale. Over the past few years, the program has ev...olved to a full comprehensive Advanced Structural Heart Disease Program offering TAVR, MitraClip, WATCHMAN, PFO/ASD closure, etc to our patients. Today, we performed our 210th and our first Medtronic CoreValve Evolut PRO+ TAVR. Many thanks and congratulations to all my colleagues at Adventist Health Glendale! #TAVR #MitraClip #watchman #PFOClosure #aorticstenosis #mitralregurgitation #adventisthealth #glendaleheartinstitute See more

There is a laundry list of reasons I’m so thankful to be an interventional cardiologist, and I’m sure my physician colleagues/friends can relate to many of thos...e. I’m so grateful to my patients and their families who always remind me what is truly meaningful and important in life. Even at the end of most trying days, when the brain calms from the daytime barrage of pressures and one can reflect, it is pretty damn cool to realize the incredible privilege you have to make such a positive impact on others. Fate They always say we can control our destiny but not our fate. I believe each one of us comes to this universe for a reason, often for a good reason. We all ...cry out loud when we come out of the womb into the world, but by the same token that brings the highest level of joy any family can imagine. When we leave this world, we usually do it so peacefully without making so much noise, but the pain we leave behind for our loved ones most often is unimaginable, usually unbearable... I’ve had the opportunity of taking care of a hardworking lovely couple over the past year. Funny, simple and generous father and mother of a family of four. But, don’t get me wrong; very bad patients. Smokers, overweight, with unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle, poorly controlled diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol. You name it. I told the family that unfortunately their wife/mother needs to have an urgent coronary angiogram due to her progressive angina symptoms. All of them were so concerned and worried. Even more so, during the COVID-19 outbreak, as the family members are not allowed to visit nor come into the hospital with the patient. The wife was so upset. Dr. Rafie, it is our 30th anniversary in less than 2 weeks, I want to be home for it. And I replied, You’ll be there way ahead of the time;) She underwent successful simple diagnostic coronary angiogram and unfortunately was found to have one of the worst kind of coronary artery disease. So uncharacteristic of me as I usually offer my patients with less invasive angioplasty procedures, I recommended her to consult with a surgeon for coronary bypass surgery. I had several meetings and phone calls with the patient and her family to help them make the best decision. I told her, If you were my older sister, I would definitely choose the option of bypass surgery for you. The family were so concerned especially the husband. He called me to make sure she’ll be fine for their anniversary and I promised him that she’ll be there. The surgery went so smooth and she received 3 bypass grafts. On the 3rd day after the surgery, one day before her discharge, I walked to her room and we made a FaceTime call to her husband. He was giggling with tears of joy while staring at his wife through the small screen of his iPhone. I asked him, Your anniversary is on this weekend, right? He replied, Yes doc! Can’t wait for it. I told them, Congratulations! I made my promise. Now it is your turn. You guys should quit smoking. And he replied in his usual simple way of communicating, I already did doc two days ago. Just for her. I love you honey! Our 30th anniversary in 3 days! Muaaah! I laughed and told the wife, Do you want to tell him anything? And she smiled, I love you too honey:) Next day, I visited her early in the morning and did the discharge paperwork. Later as I was heading out of the hospital to the clinic, they overhead paged me. I called back and talked to the nurse. Dr. Rafie, please come back to the unit. We need you here! I rushed back to the unit. Patient’s brothers were there to deliver her the devastating news of sudden death of her husband overnight and they wanted to make sure I’ll be there with them! He had a massive heart attack resulted in cardiac arrest and despite prolonged CPR/ACLS he didn’t make it. Just 3 nights short of their 30th anniversary! I was completely speechless. Walked to the room with her brothers. She had no clue why they were there. I kneeled down and held her hands. I talked about how important it was that we found the problem soon enough before any major damage to her heart happened. I just didn’t know how to tell her this horrible news. And then, a long 30 second silence in the room before her brother told her what happened. You could see that her big heart surgery didn’t break her but how that devastating news broke her heart... I saw her two days ago in the clinic. She came with a box of chocolates and the below thank you card. As she was leaving my office, she cried, Thank you Dr. Rafie! I made it to our anniversary.

Please take COVID-19 seriously! We had to intubate our young 7 month pregnant patient with no comorbidites and transfer her to a higher level of care for ECMO placement. Please keep her and her baby in your prayers. I hope they’ll do fine.

Glendale Heart Institute is proud to announce that Dr. Amirreza Solhpour and Dr. Amir Sadrzadeh Rafie were able to perform the first two successful MitraClip cases in the city of Glendale and put Adventist Health Glendale on the map as one of the only 9 hospitals out of 121 hospitals in Greater Los Angeles Area to offer this complex procedure. So grateful to all of our colleagues at Adventist Health Glendale who have helped us build and expand our Advanced Structural Heart Disease program to a full comprehensive one. MitraClip is a less-invasive mitral regurgitation treatment option for certain people with mitral regurgitation who are not suitable for surgery. #mitraclip Glendale Heart Institute Adventist Health

Cardiac Interventional Telemetry Unit (CITU) is a unit we used to take care of our patients with heart problems that has been turned into a COVID unit since the... beginning of COVID-19 pandemic. Everyday, each of these kindhearted nurses is assigned to take care of 4 patients with COVID-19 for their 12 hour long shifts. They spend most of their time being in direct contact with patients. Have so much respect for these TRUE HEROES and it is an honor to call myself their colleague. Happy Nurses Week! See more
