Yesterday I showed you a jaw dropping kitchen, the kind I’d love to design. Today is my more humble one. We have plans to replace the counters and floors in this little galley kitchen hopefully this fall. But what I wanted to showcase is sustainability in home design. Aside from the black marble cutting board and my bowls nothing on these shelves is big box. Many of these items are handmade, bought locally, foraged or vintage. My biggest regrets when I walk around my home are... hands down the impulse big box purchases still around, like when I see something trendy at target and say I need that throw in the cart without much thought. A few months later I realize maybe it was the look I was after but what it’s lacking is soul. Don’t get me wrong there are times when it is just the right piece, there are timed when big box retailers are what a client wants / needs. But imagine instead of going to (homegoods, target, west elm...) and buying 4 different things because they are so cheap you bought just one beautiful item made my someone who sends you a note how grateful they are or if you are lucky enough like me, to be a neighbor of the lovely @jkojimaceramics who drops off a one of a kind fruit bowl to your door you hope to pass down to your children one day. Wouldn’t that bring your so much more joy? Happy earth day. I have been dragging my feet trying to address how I feel about the hate crimes against the Asian community that have been making headlines as of late. Because let's be very clear here, this is not new. Our recent leadership has thrown some extra fuel on the fire but the flames have long been burning. Over the past year this is what I have been thinking the most about, how do we prevent racism from happening? I've always loved the African proverb, It takes a village to raise... a child." SO LETS BE A BETTER VILLAGE. Whether as a parent, an Auntie/ Uncle, neighbor or volunteer, even if kids aren't your thing don't let the opportunity to effect real change be wasted. Because if we spent half as much time with our children working on this as we do arguing with our racist high school friend on facebook we'd probably get much farther towards the end goal. I think making more bridges between our children may be the best path forward (aside from maybe voting). If you're a parent choose your schooling wisely. Instead of how many wooden toys a preschool has being a priority, consider making whether or not it's diverse as the top one. This may be harder in some areas than others but there are still opportunities out there. Kids in the US as early as 3 years old have associated negative traits with certain racial groups. YES REPEAT THAT SENTENCE! As a non parent you can get in on the action too. Take a kid out to your favorite Vietnamese restaurant, to the Jewish cultural museum etc and tell them how much you enjoy learning from other cultures whether it be the spices they use or the kind of art they make. If you get asked to a childrens party instead of bailing (and I wouldn't blame you) show up with a book that shows characters from outside their own race. Lastly if you afford to save to travel do it, the best way to appreciate HUMANS that are not the same as us is to let them in to our lives and enjoy the world together, and the younger the better. Let's worry less about what the children are going to be when they grow up and more about WHO THEY’RE GOING TO BE. Let's define success not with their college degree but their level of empathy.
