All agents who sell insurance in California must be licensed with the California Department of Insurance. Something else you need to check on is the AM Best rating of the company the agent is selling you a policy on. This will tell you their financial stability to be able to pay claims. Also ask if the company is admitted which means that they are registered to sell insurance in the state of California. There are non-admitted companies that do sell here, and they may have A+ AM Best ratings nationwide, but if things go wrong and you are not satisfied with their service the State DOI cannot help you out to get resolve.
