Hi GFC members! It’s been a bit more than a month since I’ve started college and a new fencing program at Duke University. However, as I train here I can’t help... myself from getting homesick and thinking back on my experience with GFC and how it shaped my life. When I first came to GFC around 2014, I was just looking for a place to get better at fencing. Instead, I found coaches and a community that helped me not only become a better fencer, but a better person. Sergei genuinely cares about my fencing but also my life, and this never changed throughout the entire 6 years I’ve been there. He was there to fix my parry 4 as much as he was there for me if I’m having a rough time at a tournament. Caro also helped me a great deal. In 2016, she brought Lenna and me to Germany to train with the German National Team. I trained with German Olympians and was even lucky enough to beat Anne Sauer once in a pool bout. It was an experience of lifetime, and I am eternally grateful to Caro and Sergei for this opportunity. There were many ups and downs, especially at the beginning, but it was worth it in the end. Eventually as a junior in high school, I was able to finish in the top eight two straight times in Cadet NAC competitions and finished in the top twenty in my first Division I NAC. I even got to compete in Europe as a part of the USA Cadet National Team. Finally, I accepted a fencing scholarship from Duke University. Plus, I made some life-long friends along the way (you know who you are). None of this would have been possible if it were not for the efforts of Sergei and Caro and the GFC family. Joining GFC was for sure one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. Thank you so much for everything, and I can’t wait until I come back!
