Covid-19 Vaccine Q&A Q; Are vaccine side effects likely to be as strong for kids? A; Not all adults experience systemic side effects (e.g. fever, muscle aches, fatigue) or local reactions (e.g. soreness and swelling at the injection site) and not all children will, either. Keep in mind, as with any immunization, these post-vaccine symptoms are time-limited and if a child is miserable, a half dose of ibuprofen or Tylenol may be used. I don’t recommend pre-treating with either..., however. Wait and see how your child does with vaccination because more often than not they won’t need fever/pain medicine. And, a whole foods diet with lots of phytonutrients from vegetables and fruit go a long way to keep immune systems healthy and resilient and able to respond well to the immune stimulus of vaccination. Keeping sugar to a minimum, making sure kids are sleeping enough, and providing whole foods based nutrition will go a long way to ensure healthy immunity. At GetzWell we are happy to make personalized recommendations for immune protection and strengthening around the time of vaccination of any kind.

Q: My child's grandparents are fully vaccinated. Is it safe for us to visit again? A: The CDC has now said this: Fully vaccinated people (>2 weeks post the second vaccine) can visit with unvaccinated people from a single household who are at low risk for severe COVID-19 disease indoors without wearing masks or physical distancing. Families may need to be more cautious, however, in areas where community spread is high, which isn't the case in San Francisco right now but is in other parts of the country.

A gratitude practice can take many forms. With children, one fun and easy way to share a gratitude practice is to take a minute or two at bedtime to share your Rose, Bud, and Thorn for the day. A rose is something you loved about your day, a bud is something you’re looking forward to tomorrow, and a thorn is something that was, well, thornyanything that you didn’t like. This powerful little conversation can bring so much connection, awareness, and gratitude. How do you practice gratitude with your children?

Between COVID and Winter, we've become a nation that stays indoors. It may be safer and more comfortable but it's not doing anything to help cut down on your stress. Make it a point to take a meditative walk this week (with proper precautions, of course). Enjoy the warmer weather and the spring blooms. Really soak in the sights, smells and sounds you encounter along the way. A true stress reliever, walking is also the perfect way to start moving a body that's been inactive. https://www.resources.soundstrue.com//mindful-movement-wa/

"I feel more rooted now than ever, more resilient. It may come as a surprise to many of you that I suffered from anxiety much of my adult life, in spite of the fact that people have long seen me as calm, cool and collected. My journey to finding my peace has been gradualactually, it spanned several decades. During this last year, as challenging (and at times frightening) as it’s been, I have discovered a greater sense of my own gravity and my feet are more planted than ever ...as a result of my gratitude practice. I am grateful for so many things: my health, the beauty around me, my supportive husband, and GetzWell’s valued role in the community which gives significant meaning to my life. More than a year of consistently practicing gratitude means I was able to make this list pretty effortlessly." Dr. G shares her thoughts on how practicing gratitude helped her get through this past year. Read the full story on our blog: https://getzwell.com/gratitude-in-the-time-of-covid-dr-get/

With the many benefits to your child’s cognitive development, immune system, gut health, and bonding, the protective and health promoting properties of breast milk are nothing short of amazing! At the same time, the reality of our modern world means that pollutants that contaminate our bodies on a daily basis can be passed on to our little ones through breast milk. The presence of toxins is higher in the breast milk of first-time moms and during the early months of breastfeeding, so it is never too early to limit your exposure. While we may not be able to eliminate all toxins from our lives, read on to learn more about the steps you can take to reduce your own body burden and, in turn, that of your children. https://getzwell.com/avoiding-environmental-pollutants-dur/

It likely goes without saying but digital devices are downright addictive. Studies reveal that the brain gets so captivated by the colors, shapes, sounds, and overall interactivity of screen media that it responds by producing dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps to control the brain’s reward and pleasure centers. Because of this dopamine boost, kids enter into an almost trance-like state, as if in another world, when engaging with their digital devices. This overwhelming ...sensation can make it difficult, perhaps even painful, for them to disengage from the media they’re consuming. So when your child balks (or worse) at having to put down his iPad, it’s likely not because he’s willfully being difficult his mind and body are responding to the sudden drop of dopamine, which is quite powerful. Need help managing your child's screen time. Read on for some tips from Doctor Julia: https://getzwell.com/tips-tricks-for-managing-your-kids-sc/

A lack of structured outdoor play time, no after school sports and 24/7 access to the kitchen is likely to make childhood obesity an even bigger problem than it already is. Start by setting a good example with what you eat and keep the kitchen stocked with healthy alternatives for quick snacks. And though it may not seem related, helping your child get a break from screen time can also help as it reduces stress which can lead to over eating. Here's more on the subject from ...The Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com//2020/10/06/child-obesity-/

Since the gut is where about 70% of the immune system is, keeping our GI tracts healthy makes good sense at this time. One way to do this is to take a Megasporebiotic 1 capsule twice a day and of course, you want to eat plenty of vegetables with prebiotic fibers to support your belly bugs.
