Just two more #KeepingItModern grants from 2020 to introduce! With soaring interior spaces and stunning expanses of stained glass, Wallace Harrison's First Presbyterian Church blends innovative design with modernist interpretations of traditional cathedral elements. This Connecticut church was constructed with prefabricated panels of precast concrete that come together in a distinctive, fish-shaped form, evoking one of most common symbols of early Christianity. Enhancing the ...building's silhouette are its stained-glass sanctuary windows that sparkle with over 20,000 pieces of amber, emerald, ruby, amethyst, and sapphire glass, executed using a pioneering approach of setting colored glass within a concrete matrix, known as dalle de verre. In 2016, we awarded a grant to Highland Green Foundation to develop the church's conservation management plan. Today, with this new implementation grant, the project team will create mockups and perform field tests on one of the church's walls in order to conserve, repair, and stabilize the dalle de verre elements. Given the wide-spread use of dalle de verre in modern religious architecture, the conservation solutions and treatments developed by the specialists will contribute significantly to emerging international standards for the preservation these distinctive glass decorations. https://gty.art/39m6oLg

Calling all early career art historians! Getty/ACLS Fellowship applications are due 10/28. What does being a #GettyACLS Fellow look like? To find out, we spoke with Dr. Kyrah Malika Daniels, an art historian and religion scholar who used her 2019-20 fellowship to research the religious arts and healing traditions of Central Africa and the Caribbean, two regions linked by the TransAtlantic Slave Trade. I conducted interviews with healers, priests, and priestesses in Haiti a...nd the Democratic Republic of Congo about their methods of religious healing and the sacred art objects they use to connect with the spirits to offer patients holistic treatment, says Daniels. This research on alternative healing practices became even more relevant because of the coronavirus pandemic." The fellowship gave Daniels time to revise her book for publication. She also conducted 75+ interviews with Haitian and Congolese healers, priests, and priestesses using a combination of 5 languages (French, Haitian Kreyòl, KiKongo, Lingala, KiSakata), with the help of translators. The fellowship allowed me to return to these interviews and make new discoveries about specialists' perspectives on religious healing and the role of sacred art objects in people's daily lives. What’s next for Daniels? She’s submitting her book manuscript for publication in December and returning to teaching. I’m feeling energized by the research and writing I accomplished. I’m ready to share new research with my students, and to continue to learn from them as always! Apply Now: https://www.acls.org/programs/getty/

Does this site look familiar? That's because last year, we awarded the Buzludzha Monument a #KeepingItModern grant to develop a conservation management plan. This year, we've awarded a second grant to fund the emergency repair of the monument's elaborate interior mosaics, which are at extremely high risk of being destroyed. The mosaics highlight events, figures, and policies from 20th-century Bulgarian history and are a culturally significant design element that is integral to the preservation of the building. With grant support, experts will install a shelter to protect the mosaics from the elements, and perform technical investigations and implementations to stabilize the mosaics and prevent their detachment from the concrete walls. https://gty.art/39m6oLg Photo 1: Romain Veillon. A Getty grant is supporting the conservation of Giulio Cesare Procaccini's "Virgin with Child, Saints, and Angels" (1615-20) at Centro Conservazione e Restauro La Venaria Reale" in Turin, Italy. The double-sided painting was once used for religious ceremonies but, due to extensive damage and approximately 170 tears in its canvas, hasn't been on display since 1850. Get an update from Sara Abram, Secretary General of the center, about the project and how a group of experts is meeting this week to discuss the highly challenging structural treatment, which will include methods such as de-lining, filling, the application of canvas inserts, tear mending, and stretching.

Meet another of our 2020 #KeepingItModern grantees: Oberstufen-Schulzentrum (OSZ) Wedding. This former school, with its orange façade, curved-edge panels, and rounded windows, brings a Pop flare to the Bauhaus-derived language of international modernism. OSZ was built in 1976 in Berlin's largest postwar urban redevelopment zone. Skylights, large windows, and the auditorium's prominent glass façade communicate transparency and integrate exterior & interior spaces. The open, h...orizontal layout reflects the school's reformist goals to strip away class hierarchies. Declining enrollment forced the school to close in 2011. Since then, the nonprofit ps wedding has advocated for the building's reuse as a community center. A Getty grant will help an interdisciplinary team of experts research the building and develop a conservation strategy. Technische Universität Berlin will help ensure that the plan considers the cultural importance of the building and the needs of the local community. Since the start of the pandemic, the arts have lost 2.3M+ jobs. The arts help us understand, process, and empathize with the world. They help unite us and are crucial to our development as a global community. Losing them is out of the question. That’s why we are joining Ford Foundation & other donors and foundations to commit $156 million to Black, Latinx, Asian & Indigenous arts organizations affected by COVID-19. Grantees will be deemed America’s Cultural Treasures and ar...e organizations that represent the diversity of expression and excellence in America, but that historically go unrecognized and under-resourced. The scope and recipients of local programs will be announced in early 2021 and more cities and regions will be added as funders join this effort. http://blogs.getty.edu//16-major-donors-including-getty-f/

Interior inspo from 1904. What do you think? Tell us in the comments. This is Hill House, designed by Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. He believed in the idea of a house being a "total work of art" and applied this principle to the Hill House made for publisher Walter W. Blackie. Located outside of Glasgow, the building departed from its Arts and Crafts counterparts to also include Art Nouveau, Scottish Baronial, Vienna Workshop, and Japonisme styles, and decisiv...ely shaped the course of modern design. What makes this building modern? * clean lines and broad unadorned wall space * unified exterior and interior aesthetic * use of a new material for the time: Portland cement We help fund conservation efforts of modern architecture around the world through our "Keeping It Modern" initiative. https://www.getty.edu//current/keeping_it_modern/index.html

Can art history advance diversity by bringing forth underrepresented histories? Jacopo Gnisci, a 2019-20 Getty/ACLS Fellow who spent a year researching his specialty of Ethiopian art, believes it can. We’re living in a time in which western institutions are rightly facing unprecedented demand to diversify staff and focus more on the Global South than the Global North. It is thus imperative that we produce a more diversified and global approach to the study of art history. ...Over the past year, Gnisci’s Getty/ACLS Fellowship allowed him to perform in-depth research on Ethiopian and Eritrean art, publish his findings, and bring vital new attention to the subject. One discovery? He identified and dated a stolen Ethiopian crown kept in the Netherlands. Gnisci was also able to identify the monastery from which the crown was taken, allowing the Dutch government to return it to its legitimate owners. Are you an art historian looking to perform in-depth research and make an impact in your field? Applications for the 2021-22 Getty/ACLS Fellowships in the History of Art are open through October 28, 2020. https://gty.art/3c1LbHW #GettyACLS
