Dear Students, Colleagues, and Friends, The department of German and Russian stands and mourns with our Black students, alumni, and colleagues. We are saddened and outraged by the injustice we see. We side with the protesters across the country and around the world in their peaceful demonstrations against racism and police and government violence. The members of the German and Russian Department express our solidarity with the members of the Intercollegiate Department of Afr...icana Studies whose statement we have added to this post. As scholars who study and teach about parts of the world where oppression and intimidation have often subverted the rule of law, we are sensitive to the values of human rights and human dignity. Yet slavery, racism, antisemitism, xenophobia, and other forms of discrimination, sometimes murderous, saturate not only the history of the countries at the center of our department; they are more deeply rooted in the US than many of us wanted to believe. We are sad and indignant over the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and others, as well as the injustices done in the name of the law; our sadness and indignation shall give rise to our ever-deepening commitment to listening to and supporting the voices of people of color. We are committed to fighting against racial discrimination and for justice in our own department and in the local and international communities in which we teach, learn, live and grow.
