My experience raising turkeys for the first time- part 1 We got the poults way back in May. They were so small then and covered in soft down. They were friendly too, nothing like the hulking, gobbling packages of meat we tend to think of turkeys as. From the first, they were fed Scratch N Peck organic non-GMO corn and soy free feed. That’s a lot of labels, right? All that’s basically means they were fed the best food we could find without GMOs or fillers like corn and soy w...hich fatten the birds but have no real nutritional value. Their feed was supplemented with black oil sunflower seeds, mealworms, and vegetables. The turkeys grew fast. Soon, we moved them from their brooder in our garage to a larger pen outside. Here they had spent their days scratching in the dirt, spreading their feathers in the sun, and eating, eating, eating. I knew turkeys were voracious eaters, but there is a difference between knowing and seeing with my own eyes. They ate constantly! It was hard work keeping up with their seemingly bottomless stomachs, but I cane to enjoy my time with them. They were fascinating creatures and I loved watching them noodle around in the sunshine. We have nine turkeys total, four toms and five hens. One of those hens I took to the fair; I’ll talk more about that in a later post.

Welcome to our first monthly Turkey Talk! This is a series of posts featuring the newest residents at the farm, our turkeys! First, what’s a poult? A poult is the proper word for a baby turkey, same as a chick is a baby chicken! Our turkeys are currently still poults. Our poults are of the broad-breasted variety which is the kind you’ll enjoy on Thanksgiving. At this point, our poults are approximately four weeks old. They are fully feathered now and already they are so BIG! They are on an organic, non-GMO diet and are thriving! They will soon be moving into a pen outside where they will live happily with plenty of space and sunshine! Comment below if you have any questions about our poults and we will get back to you ASAP. Your question might even be featured at our next Turkey Talk!

Fun fact of the day: At crowing contests the number of times a rooster crows in a certain amount of time is documented and the one that crows the most wins. The record is 112 times in 30 minutes!

Fun fact of the day: the Silkie chicken was bred to warm the hands and feet of the Chinese emperor! Perhaps that's why Silkies are such great broodies!

Fun fact of the day: Chickens are smarter then you think! Studies have shown that chickens have good memories, the ability to perform basic mathematics, exhibit self-control, and can anticipate the future. From Storey's guide to raising chickens (updated edition): "To determine if chickens are capable of self-control, they (the Silsoe Research Institute) offered hens a choice between an immediate, but small payoff and a larger payoff available after a delay. The impulsive he...n choosing the less-delayed reward obtained less value, while the hen waiting for the more valuable reward was able to maximize her gain by showing self-control. Hens were trained to Peck colored keys giving them a choice between access to feed almost immediately (impulsive) but only for a short time and waiting several seconds (self-control) to gain access to feed for a longer period that allowed them to eat more. A significant number of the hens held out for more feed, proving chickens are capable of understanding that a current choice has future consequences." See more
