Have you heard of the five love languages by Gary Chapman? One of the most important things to do in a relationship is figure out which love language you give with and which one you receive with, then which love language your partner gives and receives with. Also which love languages are your parents giving and receiving with? This is important in being able to recognize the moments you feel most loved and when others feel most loved. Do you interpret those same ones as love ...or could dad gas up your car 1,000 times before you’d think it was his way of showing you love? Haha! A few other notes: Words of affirmation can be a hidden language if you have been hurt by words from those you love. Do you have a box full of letters and cards of people telling you they love you? Quality time does not include a TV or other people. If your loved one always invites someone else on the quality time with you, it can build up frustration so speak up and tell them a childhood memory of when you felt most loved with one-on-one time. Physical touch: for those that are in relationships with germ-a-phobes or people that have less contact or not much time together, this can be painful. Find new ways to work in back rubs, foot massages, or spooning. Gift giving: if you are with a gift giver that loves to give you gifts, the best way to show them back is to bring little tokens back to them if they receive that way. If they don’t, then giving them well thought out holiday gifts with great intention and work (I went across town/state line, I checked hundreds of reviews, I painted this, etc) will show them they feel adored in the time it took to think and acquire this gift. Acts of service: this can be in the category of someone that loves to cook for those they love, or take part in the household to show up. This one can be harder for some to recognize as a love language if it’s not yours. Make a list of all the things they do for you and thank them by helping them out in a big way with something not as desirable for them to do in their world. It will speak volumes!
