Typical wells that are used for extracting water from the aquifer are known as production or pumping wells. Smaller wells used to monitor or sample the groundwater are known as monitoring wells or piezometers.

The EPA does not have regulatory control over private water wells, unlike public water supplies. It is important, therefore, for the owner of the well to regularly test and treat the water for contaminants and microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria and parasites that can cause illness and disease.

After the well drilling is done, your well should be shock disinfected, flushed, and tested to determine the water quality. Your water well driller should complete this process for you.

Don't just select the lowest bidder when you choose your water well driller. Pick a driller with a good reputation, excellent references, and who uses high quality materials for the best well you can buy.

Drilling fluid ,or "drilling mud," actually serves several purposes. In addition to flushing out the cuttings (or broken pieces of rock), the fluid also cools and lubricates the drill bit and stabilizes the wall of the hole.
