Today's my birthday but I actually am excited to celebrate another important milestone that happened earlier this year... Since I wasn't posting much when June 1st rolled around due to everything going on in the country, I did want to share that Meg and I officially met studying abroad on 6/1/2010! We joined a group of 15 students and 2 professors from our university @plnu to explore Greece for a month and it was the best decision I ever made ... It was on that trip that I: Experienced Europe for the first time with eyes WIDE open! We stayed in Athens, explored the Greek Islands, Istanbul, Corinth, Meteora, Barcelona, Rome, and Paris. Bought my first professional DSLR camera and fell in LOVE with photography. Became close friends with Meg and we started dating later that year. Fell in love with the history, food, architecture, people, and culture. Meg and I got married in 2012 and returned to Athens on June 1st, 2015, exactly 5 years to the day that we there! Ok, I'm going to say it... I really miss seeing YOUR smile! Nothing can top being together in person and feeling the HUMAN connection that I believe we can only experience IN person... ... TV can't do that. Spotify can't do that. Netflix can't do that. Podcasts can't do that. Zoom can't (really) do that. Would you agree that being together can provide an energy that’s irresistible? Whether you're at the checkout stand or you run into a friend... I LOVE knowing that a simple smile can create a connection that is often felt when we're totally unhindered and able to release joy. It's tough as a dad when I see my 15 year-old-son hold back a smile because he can't see if the other person is smiling back at him... and the catch 22 is that he's not old enough to understand why people are covering their faces to begin with. But babies are smart enough to realize it's not natural. This isn't an attack on masks or the importance of them. But what I do know is that masks have had a stronger effect on my mental health than I expected and have increased my levels of anxiety. In fact, did you know that smiling releases tiny molecules in your brain to help fight off stress? According to a study by the Association for Psychological Science, neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins are released when you smile. The endorphins act as a mild pain reliever, whereas the serotonin is an antidepressant. A Scientific American study lists 7 Health Benefits of Smiling: -Pain Relief: Believe it or not, a good laugh relieves some body aches or pains. -Lower Blood Pressure -Stronger Immune System -Stress Reliever - Improved Mood: Smiling releases endorphins, which helps a person feel happier and more positive. -Better Relationships -Younger Appearance I don't know about you but I could use all of those things right about now! Today, I share openly about my journey to overcome fear and imposter syndrome on @infullframeblog. It's a delicate subject because it can feel vulnerable at times but I know there's someone out that needs to hear this... When I started shooting weddings full time in 2011, I was 21 years old (younger than almost everyone I photographed) and most likely masking my insecurities with overconfidence at times.
