Garden Grove Historical Society and Stanley-Ware Ranch 08.06.2021

The Barn and Book Sale has come to a successful conclusion. Thank you to all of you who came out and purchased your latest treasures. Thank you to the volunteers who worked the tables and the barn, Emerson Hall and the merchandise areas to keep the items coming out for sale. The next sale will be in October. We will be putting the items away and getting everything ready to sort and price things for the next sale. We will also be preparing to reopen for meetings (hopefully). W...e are already open for tours on the first and third Sundays. If you can, please refrain from bringing donations for a couple of weeks, so we can put everything away and open space up for new items. Again, thank you for being part of our Book and Barn Sale.

I forgot to mention something. Please do not bring any more donations until after the barn sale. We do not have the space to store them. If you have clothing to donate, please take them to Salvation Army or Goodwill. Also, we can not take food items of any kind, health related items, (either hard or soft goods), or any type of electronics such as computers, monitors or TV sets. Electronics may be taken to Best Buy or Staples; they can recycle them. Nor can we take mattresses ...or most furniture or large items. If you can't carry it, neither can we. We appreciate the donations that are given to us especially small items as jewelry, watches, glass and ceramics. They are our life blood. We have an ebay site that allows us to sell the valuable items that are donated. The barn sale is less than three weeks away. We will have a wide selection of items available. Until then, please do not bring anything here because we do not have the space to store it.

This is downtown Garden Grove in 1915. The Sanborn fire insurance maps are online at the library of Congress. This is the intersection of Euclid (now Main St.) and Ocean Ave. (now Garden Grove Blvd.) The YMCA is shown on the north side of Ocean Ave. If you notice, there is a building marked 'Moving Pictures" Garden Grove had a movie theater in 1915.

The first day of our Book and Barn Sale is now history. The people who came were very cooperative. They wore masks and maintained social distancing as much as possible. Because we limited the number of people in Emerson Hall, a good side effect occurred. Because the number had to be limited, we kept the door closed. Because the door was closed, we could turn on the air conditioning. It was cooler inside and much calmer. We continue the sale tomorrow and Saturday from 8:00 a.m.... to 4:30 p.m. The same rules apply as today: Mask must be worn, numbers will be limited in Emerson hall and the barn. No restrooms or trying on of clothes. Thank you for coming out today. We are putting out more things tomorrow. Come by and shop. Thank you.

If at any time, it is determined that these rules are not being followed, you will be asked to leave and we will shut down. There are also several agencies that can shut everything down, so please adhere to these rules. We want you to have as an enjoyable experience as possible. these are trying times and a little shopping could be therapeutic. Remember: Masks must be worn.
