One of the most important things to know when making your leather selection is that leather has four basic types of grains, also known as qualities. These qualities are as follows: Full-grain leather This type of leather is the highest quality. It has a smooth surface and very few flaws (if any). This type has not been buffed or sanded to remove natural markings or imperfections and the grain has not been removed. Used most often in footwear and furniture. Top-grain leather... More pliable and thinner, this is still a high-quality type. The surface is sanded and a finish coat is added. It is slightly more stain resistant than full-grain and often more readily available. Genuine leather Made from leftovers from high quality leather projects, genuine leather is lower quality but still real leather. This type of leather is nice but does not last nearly as long as its higher quality counterparts.
