Abstract and first Figure from the benchmark 2013 paper on ignition and burn propagation in the simple, cylindrical DT pellet-targets (approx 1cm x 3cm) that are most compatible with heavy-ion drivers. This paper extends and solidifies the favorable case (originally established by Russian publications in the 1980s) for cylindrical targets and heavy-ion drivers as "the way to go" to achieve commercial fusion power. The material labelled "high-Z tamper" could simply be made out of lead, and each pellet "explosion" could release the energy equivalent (in the form of heat) of two barrels of oil. One explosion per second in each of ten separate chambers would therefore be 10/sec, or 20 barrels of oil (BOE) per second, or 1.7 million BOE per day, the flow of a giant oil field during peak production.

Thanks to everyone who has "liked" Fusion Power over the past several months. Your "likes" have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated! Here is a "thought of day" about why fusion energy has not yet been realized by the world. The main obstacles have been and continue to be political, not technical. These political obstacles are complicated, but their essence can be boiled down to this simple statement of fact: It's classified! That is to say, the technology of fusion exp...losions is still, to a significant extent, a classified field of study, restricted and controlled by the U.S. government and the nuclear weapons industry that continues to develop and apply this technology for the purpose of weapons rather than energy. So, the next time you talk to someone about fusion energy and why we don't have it yet, tell them the reason: Key technology about how to do it (with fusion explosions of course, because magnetic fusion is hopeless, which is another point I'll explain in a future "post," hopefully soon --- remind me if I forget!) is still classified, FOR NO GOOD REASON. It's deplorable and tragic that declassification of certain key information about ICF (inertial confinement fusion) has not yet occurred, in effect withholding this desperately needed source of energy (health, wealth and peace) from a starving world.
