Full Belly Farm

Strong winds today and high temperatures -- it's fire weather... Here's one of our effective fire protection strategies: GOATS. We advocate their use as much as possible -- They are even better than the controlled burns. Full Belly has been grazing goats in areas where there is a dry understory for almost 20 years each April and May and they reduce the fuel load very efficiently.

We are giving our peppers the Cadillac treatment this year. Here we are planting them, soon we will install a shade trellis over them. Despite all the mulch and care we gave them last year, yields were down a lot and we think part of the issue was that we didn't put up the shade trellis.

Every year around this time our skilled and dedicated animal crew become midwives to our flock of sheep. So far this year, in a little less than two weeks, we have had 108 lambs born, including 17 sets of triplets. One task in this project, considered the most coveted of farm jobs, is to shear around the sheep's butts to keep them clean and healthy. The glamour team, Rye Muller and two of his three kids (budding shepherds), showed up this weekend dressed to the hilt.
