We are in unusual circumstances at the moment with COVID pandemic regulations. FSHNC normally holds several fundraisers per year and rely on that income to keep the house running. Why give to FSHNC during this end of year campaign? The First Step House of North County is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing temporary housing, free of charge, to sobering and recovering sick male alcoholics who are not cared for at home or by public facilities, and offer these men an introduction to sobriety. Early stage sobriety solutions for the male alcoholic are few and for those without medical insurance or means, they are unavailable in North San Diego ...County. "I am that alcoholic family member, friend and colleague, with one crucial distinction: I have been in recovery since 2017. I am not telling you this to get attention or praise. I am sharing this with you because when I hit my bottom I had no idea what to do. I knew another drink wouldn’t make me feel better but I didn’t know how to stop or if I could. One day, feeling utterly hopeless and helpless, I managed to call a friend who called some people they knew and before I knew... it two gentlemen, I had never met, visited me at home that same day. But I still did not know how to begin or where. They shared with me how they were managing life without alcohol; living full lives. Next, they told me about a place that could help, where there was no obligation, no cost, no need for insurance and no one would judge me. It sounded too good to be true but it wasn’t. They were telling me about the First Step House of North County (FSHNC). They drove me there on that day over 3 years ago. I have not had a drink since then and my life has changed in ways I could never have dreamed. I have been able to return to a career I was far removed from; I have become a better father to my son; I have become a better son, friend, partner and co-worker. It’s not just what I got back but also what I discovered and was gifted in my recovery that has made life more beautiful today than I thought possible 3 years ago. During my 10 day stay, I received an introduction to Alcoholics Anonymous provided free of charge and with no obligation or hard-sell. I now volunteer at the First Step House of North County, giving back what was freely given to me: time, experience, wisdom and love. Today, I am active in the community of people who help run the house and was invited to join the Board of Directors, where I currently serve as the Board Secretary.
