I realized today that I have been very vocal in my support of the black lives matter movement on my personal Instagram but that I hadn’t here. I honestly have not posted to this account in months and my follower count is not many but I would be part of the problem if I didn’t show up here too. What’s happening to black Americans is disgusting and unacceptable and not at all in any way new. The stories you see highlighted in the media, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, don’t get i...t twisted and think that these are new or isolated events. Systemic racism helped build America, helped white people profit and progress even further up the privilege ladder. I don’t share much about myself here on this account but I have struggled in my life, sat in anxiety and depression, worked 55+ hours at times to pay my way through college to graduate in what is affectionately referred to as the Great Recession. And still I am a recipient of white privileged because not one of my struggles has jack to do with the amount of pigment in my skin. It’s not enough to just be nice to everyone equally, we have to call out racism when we see it, we have to say to our friends and our family that this is NOT acceptable or permitted any longer. Your racist white friends and family are going to be FAR more likely to listen more openly and be more receptive to you as a white person. It’s OUR responsibility. Action Plan: Call our racism when you see and hear it, always, and ESPECIALLY when you’re uncomfortable. Donate you cash money honey. Put your money where your mouth is. I personally donated to a bail fund in my area to help protestors locally. Support local black owned businesses in your area. Read and research on your own time. There’s this thing called google, check there before asking a black friend, they’re a little busy right now. Keep it up after the media has lost interest and you no longer gain automatic social points. We have to be better ALWAYS not just now. I’ll end by explaining this photo. This is a black female officer checking her white male counterpart after he put hands on a peaceful protester. Talk about Role Model. Let’s create a world where she doesn’t have to.
