Mayday, mayday, mayday! Please consider joining our efforts to ensure we have oaks for the next couple of centuries. Thanks to San Jose Conservation Corps+Charter School Sjcc+cs for helping to clear invasive weeds! A great group of young adults helping to restore native habitat and reduce the threat of fire to our neighborhood.

Nice that some of us are beginning to be able to emerge from our sheltering in place.

San Jose’s Environmental Services Department installed two Barn Owl nest boxes in the park as part of its Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program. Yearly both boxes have been nested in by Barn Owls. The owls are nocturnal and feed on rodents. One study revealed that in order to raise a clutch of 5 owlets, the adults and owlets would consume 68 pounds of prey. The photo shows an incubating Barn Owl hen. The debris around her consists largely of regurgitated pellets, and is abnormally deep because the pandemic has prevented the annual cleaning of the nest boxes.
