We're rained out again today. In the meantime enjoy this from the archives.. If you enjoy jazz, dance, and boisterous Hollywood classics, then you would love What’s Cookin’ (1942). This movie stars big names from Hollywood's golden age such as The Andrews Sisters and Donald O' Connor, as well as music by Woody Herman. Below is the film poster (retrieved from CineMaterial.com), as well as an original movie still (which is housed in the archives).... In this film, Leo plays the role of Marvo the Great, who is a magician popular among the group of poor young performers seen around him. Throughout the film, Marvo helps the youngsters navigate their way to gaining performance work, and the story is told through lively dance numbers and exuberant jazz music. With jazz being a dominant theme in this film, it’s worth noting that American jazz emerged in the 1910s, developed by African Americans in New Orleans, Louisiana. In the 1920s America experienced the Jazz Age, which truly popularized this style, and has since been incorporated into much traditional and pop-music alike. Shifting focus back to Leo, did you know that he starred in about 90 films, not including the Cisco Kid television series?

You'll have to excuse us while we dry our feathers. The Ranch is closed today while we dry out and clean up from the stormy weather last night.

From the archives: In the photograph below taken in 1946 for Universal Pictures, we see from left to right Leo Carrillo, Roy Rogers, Yvonne de Carlo, Preston Foster, and Governor Earl Warren. (Rogers and Foster were popular actors at the time, and de Carlo was an actress who famously starred in the The Munsters, among other 60's hit films.) Focusing on Carrillo and Warren, in 1942 Warren ran for governor of California and Carrillo actively campaigned for him. Warren won gover...norship and served from 1943 to 1953 (he was a three-term governor). Warren also served as Chief Justice of the United States from 1953 to 1969. Warren has been regarded as one of the most influential judicial and political leaders among United States history, and he is well-known for his work among landmark cases such as Brown v. Board of Education (1954), and leading the Warren Commission (1963), which was an investigation of President John F. Kennedy's assassination. Hence, Carrillo's friendship with this esteemed man was nothing short of impressive. You may also know that Warren appointed Carrillo to the State Parks Commission since Carrillo was a passionate environmentalist, in which he served from 1943 to 1961. Furthermore, being the friends that they were, Warren involved Carrillo with many other affairs as well, like within the Earl Warren Sports Committee for example. In the photograph below, we see Carrillo aside Warren who smiles at Evelyn Hall Adams, an American hurdler and Olympic star. Warren presents the plaque which Adams designed for the Women's Track and Field 1952 Olympic games.

This weeks #historymystery revealed! This is an antique Catholic crucifix meant to be hung in the home, which is finely crafted of wood and detailed metalwork. The fact that it is only 7 inches long by 3.75 inches wide further emphasizes its great amount of sculptural detail. Surrounding the center crucifix are a total of 14 images, which are known to be The Stations of the Cross, as stated by the plaque which is fixated at the bottom of the wood. While the date of creatio...n for this piece is unknown, it was in use during the 1960’s when Leo Carrillo was at the Rancho de los Quiotes. With this work’s magnificent craftsmanship and vintage beauty, one need not be religious to appreciate it for the artwork that it is. #Trivia #Care4Carlsbad #carlsbadca #california #cross #history #art #craftsmanship

The #HistoryMystery this week is a protective and decorative book cover which belonged to the Carrillo family. It is made of leather, decorated with gently embossed floral motifs painted with soft colors, silk ribbon woven all around edge, and complete with a ribbon bookmark. This antique item originally resided in a bookcase in the hacienda at the Rancho De Los Kiotes, back when the Carrillo’s were still around. It is now safely stored away in the archives at the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, but its artistic beauty deserves to be shown to the public. #Trivia #Care4Carlsbad #carlsbadca #california #History #bibliophile #cover

This weeks #historymystery is so fun! Here is a page which was created for the 10 Years of Carlsbad magazine, back in 2014. This page features photographs of two locations in Carlsbad, California, with images before the 21st century, as well as after. The descriptions on the page explain the historical contexts of the photographs. Among the first two photographs atop the page, we see Carlsbad Boulevard in 2014, as well as in 1939. As for the two photographs at the bottom of... the page, we see the neighborhood streets of La Costa in 2014, and in the 1970s. Be sure to read the description boxes for a brief history of these local areas! #lacosta #Care4Carlsbad #carlsbadca #carlsbadmagazine #Trivia

This weeks #historymystery is one of our favorite photos of these two! These lovely hands which were shown earlier this week belong to Leo Carrillo and his daughter Antoinette, or Tony, clearly shown by this vintage photograph. This father and daughter duo is sharing a dance at the Club Mocambo in Hollywood. Tony is wearing a beautiful dress paired with a sparkling diamond bracelet and rose crown an outfit truly fit for the 1950’s celebrity girl. This photograph was taken... on June 18, 1954. It is by the photographer Nat Dallinger for King Features Syndicate’s Inside Hollywood. Dallinger was famous for his photography covering the Hollywood scene from around the 1930’s to the 1970’s, and wrote a book showcasing his works titled Unforgettable Hollywood. King Features Syndicate was founded by William Randolph Hearst, who Leo also worked for as a cartoonist in his past. #trivia #history #california #actor #Care4Carlsbad #leocarrillo #vintage #vintagefashion #InsideHollywood #Dallinger #clubmocambo
