Tennis legend Billie Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs in three straight sets to win the famous Battle of the Sexes tennis match on this day in 1973. Once the wo...rld’s number one tennis player for several years, Riggs, a self-proclaimed male chauvinist, claimed that the female game was inferior and that a female player could not beat him even after he had retired from competition. King accepted his challenge and beat Riggs at a highly publicized game in the Houston Astrodome watched by an estimated 90 million people worldwide. The audience of over 30,000 is still the largest ever to watch a tennis match in the US. King's victory was hailed as a triumph for women worldwide and is credited, along with the passage of Title IX the previous year, in igniting a boom in girls' and women's sports. King continued her tennis dominance for many years during her career, capturing numerous titles including 12 Grand Slam singles titles, 16 Grand Slam women's doubles titles, and 11 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. A long-time advocate of gender equity in sports, King also founded the Women's Sports Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the lives of girls and women through sports and physical activity. Billie Jean King's story is told in the inspiring picture book, "I am Billie Jean King," for ages 4 to 8 at https://www.amightygirl.com/i-am-billie-jean-king There is also a new Inspiring Woman doll in honor of King for ages 6 and up at https://www.amightygirl.com/billie-king-doll The story of this historic match is told in the excellent film "Battle of the Sexes" for ages 13 and up at https://www.amightygirl.com/battle-of-the-sexes King is also featured in the board book "Baby Feminists" for ages 0 to 3 (https://www.amightygirl.com/baby-feminists), illustrated biography "Women in Sports: 50 Fearless Athletes Who Played to Win" for ages 9 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/women-in-sports) and "Rad American Women A-Z: Rebels, Trailblazers, and Visionaries Who Shaped Our History... Saddened by today's news. Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg spent a lifetime disagreeing: disagreeing with inequality, arguing against unfair treatment,... and standing up for what’s right for people everywhere. This biographical picture book about the Notorious RBG tells the justice’s story through the lens of her many famous dissents, or disagreements. Today we remember, we read, and we honor Ruth. See more
