We’re celebrating our #COSSGrads by featuring our Outstanding Students! Brenda A. Jaramillo-Becerra is this year’s Child and Family Science Outstanding student. She was born and raised in Michoacan, Mexico, and chose her major because she wanted to understand the cognitive, social, emotional and physical development of her daughters. She wants to help low-income populations attain services that promote appropriate developmental practices for their young ones and for the whole family unit. She's volunteered at the Clovis Boys & Girls Club and interns as a Match Support Specialist Aid for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central California. She wants to advocate for local families that do not have a voice because of their socio-economic and legal status. Child and Family Science

We’re celebrating our #COSSGrads by featuring our Outstanding Students! Angelica Rodriguez is this year’s Anthropology Outstanding student. Angelica is a first-generation high school and college graduate, and a double major in philosophy and anthropology with a minor in political science. She chose philosophy because of her love for knowledge: philosophy studies the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence. She chose anthropology because she believes that the best way to understand ourselves is with understanding and appreciating others around us. Angelica is currently the President of the Anthropology Club and the Editor-In-Chief of the Anthropology club magazine, Life, Anthro, and Culture. She plans to pursue a master's in anthropology and then law school.

President Joseph I. Castro ordered Fresno State’s national and state flags to be posted at half-staff today, in honor of Richard Keyes, a former professor who died on Sept. 27 at the age of 85. In 1968, Professor Keyes was recruited to Fresno State (named Fresno State College at that time) to help launch the Black studies and the ethnic studies programs, where he also developed the first summer education program for high school students. Dr. Castro recognizes Professor Keyes’ rich legacy in the Fresno community and his visionary leadership in the development of Black studies and ethnic studies at Fresno State, at a time when such programs were nascent throughout the country. Today, we honor Professor Keyes’ memory and legacy. His contributions to our campus and the community are deep and lasting.

The goal is ultimately to reverse the school-to-prison pipeline, according to founding director Emma Hughes, who is also a criminology professor at Fresno State. She hopes the program can change society’s view about people who have been to prison and help students who fall into the justice system at a young age by creating a prison-to-school pipeline.
