Fresno State alumna Julie Pedraza & Cayci Allison are helping oversee an innovative 'Pumped Up for Pumpkins" virtual fall outreach project for +100 local youth ...& leaders. The Kearney Agricultural Research & Extension (KARE) program meets bi-weekly this semester with youth from Fresno County 4-H, Madera County & the FARMS Land-Based Learning programs to teach agronomy & STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) principles. Students have been split into 15 groups & work with KARE staff to raise pumpkins at the research farm near Parlier. Each team has a virtual budget to purchase land, protective mulch, irrigation district water, fertilizer treatment, & pumpkin varieties. Using website & Instagram photos, students can view their plot & are given bi-regular farm reports. Lessons also include smart farm technology such as drones used for flyover & irrigation reports, a soil analysis by Dellavalle Laboratory Inc., & guest lecturers from Van Groningen Pamper'd Farms discussing pumpkin diseases, insects & other topics. At the end of the season, each team & plot will be evaluated to determine which management plan yielded the largest quantity, best quality, largest total weight, &/or most profitable pumpkins. Students will then discuss the growing season & events & decisions that might have affected their outcomes (ex. gophers or aphids taking out some of their plants) & also receive a pumpkin as a reward.
